Munzón Gallery is excited to announce Priscilla Sandra Flores’ first solo exhibition with the gallery ‘Loud Bark.’ The exhibition opens with a reception on Saturday November 16th from 6-9pm. ‘Loud Bark’ is a new series of paintings and drawings that were created by Priscilla Sandra Flores in response to the consumption of day-to-day contemporary economic and societal pressures. Influenced by the works of William Blake and Larry Madrigal, whose imaginary worlds are consumed by the commotion of what exists in them, Flores focuses on relationships with substance use, people, culture and herself. She is the subject or a stand-in model of domestic or mystic narratives that encapsulate the chaos, grit and emptiness that live in a moment. Examining her life as it is now, pulling and twisting every feeling and experience to ultimately create a vague shape of what life looks like under pressure, heartbroken, in love and forever in flux. Priscilla Sandra Flores (b. 1993) is a first generation Mexican-American painter born in Los Angeles and raised in the San Gabriel Valley. Storytelling is a big component in her work. At an early age, she gained interest in narration as she felt close to her family’s stories of their southern Mexican Catholic life. She frequently uses self-portraiturature to discuss the relationship to the body and sensuality that shaped her Mexican upbringing within a homogenized American culture. Priscilla’s current work reflects her identity and sexuality. Priscilla received a BFA in Drawing and Painting from the School of Art, California State University, Long Beach in 2019. She has exhibited nationally and internationally at art venues including Munzón Gallery, Thinkspace Projects, Tlaloc Studios, Stay Gallery, Open Gallery Long Beach, and the STRAAT Museum.

We are excited to announce Mark Anthony Hocutt's @little_lowlows first solo exhibition with the gallery "Diamond in the Rough" opening Saturday October 5th from 6-9pm and will remain on view through November 2, 2024. “Diamond in the Rough" marks a pivotal moment in Mark Anthony Hocutt's artistic journey, where the intersection of automotive craftsmanship and fine art reaches new heights. A Whittier native, Hocutt's roots in Southern California's car culture are palpable in his work, which has always blurred the lines between traditional fine art and the intricate world of lowrider kustomization. Known for his signature kustom painted plexiglass panels, Hocutt's practice has evolved in this new body of work, where mural elements begin to play a significant role. This integration speaks to a deeper exploration of space and narrative within his compositions, offering viewers a dynamic interplay between art and automotive design. In "Diamond in the Rough," Hocutt showcases a newfound confidence in his technique, introducing complex paint applications that include the use of brushes, airbrushes, and other kustom painting methods. These elements create layered, intricate compositions that challenge the viewer's perception of depth and movement. Some pieces draw attention to focal points or central motifs, while others suggest an expansion beyond the frame, evoking the grandeur of a complete lowrider build. This exhibition not only highlights Hocutt's mastery of design, composition, and color theory but also invites us to reconsider the boundaries of fine art, especially in the context of a self-taught artist who defies the conventions of formal training. "Diamond in the Rough" is a testament to Hocutt's ongoing journey, where each piece reflects both his deep cultural roots and his relentless pursuit of artistic innovation.
