The MCU Foundation is dedicated to empowering New Yorkers by focusing on education, housing, and basic needs. Looking back at the Third Quarter, we’re proud to share some of what we’ve accomplished, thanks to your donations: Education: Earlier this year, we awarded nearly $80,000 in scholarships to 16 high school seniors who demonstrated academic excellence and a commitment to community service, embodying the credit union philosophy of “people helping people.” We have committed to repeating the scholarship program this year – be on the lookout! First-Time Homebuyer Grants: Recognizing the importance of homeownership in building generational wealth, we offer grants of up to $10,000 to qualifying first-time homebuyers, making homeownership more accessible to New Yorkers. Five New Yorkers have already taken advantage of this program, and more are in the pipeline. Basic Needs: We are committed to uplifting our neighbors who are struggling. This quarter, we provided no-strings grants to New Yorkers affected by fires in apartment buildings in the Bronx, Queens, and Manhattan that required them to vacate, and we collaborated with local government in Yonkers to offer free meal cards to families challenged by a loss of gas service and unable to cook. Through efforts like these, the MCU Foundation is making a tangible difference in the lives of our community. Come join us! Did you know? ? New Yorkers living below the poverty line were not the only ones struggling to get by in 2022 – more than 4.6 million New Yorkers (56%) had incomes below 200% of the poverty line. ? New Yorkers with incomes below 200% of the poverty line were twice as likely to experience difficulty paying for housing, energy and telephone bills, and food than those above 200% of the line. ? The MCU Foundation donated $5,000 in meal gift cards to support 100 households affected by a prolonged gas outage at the Palisade Towers in Yonkers, NY. This initiative, in partnership with the Yonkers City Council and its President Lakisha Collins-Bellamy, aimed to provide immediate relief to the impacted residents. Since its establishment, the MCU Foundation has focused on addressing essential community needs, including access to food, medicine, and transportation, especially for New Yorkers facing hardship.
