Mundo Verde Bilingual Public Charter School

With the new school year underway, I’d like to call special attention to a school in Washington, D.C. that I believe is doing something radically different and exciting. Mundo Verde Bilingual Public Charter School has woven together a unique pedagogy teaching underserved elementary school children. The school is not just educating students to be “successful and compassionate global stewards of their communities.” It’s not just a bilingual immersion school. It’s not just a school built, promoted, and located in an area of the city to encourage and embrace diversity. It’s not just a school built around hands-on expeditionary learning (EL). It’s not just a school with two LEED-certified buildings and constructing a third one at its Calle Ocho Campus. It’s all of those things! So much so that when the school’s founders applied to the D.C. Public Charter School Board, 14 years ago, the school board questioned whether we really wanted to be this ambitious and if we really needed to do all these things together. (For transparency: I was a founding board member of the school and, after rolling off the board some years back, I now advise school leaders on strategic communications.) Our bilingual team has supported the school through some exciting and challenging times: Covid. Teacher retention. The response to the killing of George Floyd, Trayvon Martin, and other Black Americans. And the politics surrounding the Obama, Trump, and Biden presidencies. Amidst these challenges, we developed and choreographed a piece with CBS News, helping them to accurately capture the essence of the school in a two-minute report that aired across the country on more than 150 stations. With researched-based stakeholder engagement, executive coaching, alignment of communication narratives across multiple channels, meeting facilitation, and the strengthening of core infrastructure through content management and other services, we have enabled the school to grow, seize opportunities, and manage risks effectively.

This week, we welcomed Rich Pohlman as our Interim Executive Director! ?? Rich brings a wealth of experience in education and leadership, and he’s already hit the ground running, connecting with staff, students, and the community. We’re excited to see the positive impact he’ll continue to make as we work together to support our mission. ?Esta semana le dimos la bienvenida a Rich Pohlman como nuestro Director Ejecutivo Interino! ?? Rich aporta una gran experiencia en educación y liderazgo, y ya ha comenzado a trabajar, conectando con el personal, los alumnos y la comunidad. Estamos emocionados de ver el impacto positivo que continuará teniendo mientras trabajamos juntos para apoyar nuestra misión.
