Despite Governor Tina Kotek's focus on increasing housing and addressing issues with the state's housing inventory, recent statistics collected by CoStar show numbers are far below the 10-year quarterly average. Multifamily NW members Greg Frick, co-founder of HFO Investment Real Estate · Member of GREA, and Tom Brenneke, president of Guardian Real Estate Services, shared their thoughts in Anthony Effinger's recent article in the Willamette Week. ? 'If you want the private sector to build housing, you can’t keep setting up these hurdles,” Frick says. “You’re not making a compelling case to invest here.' ? Multifamily NW board president Andie Smith was in Salem to represent housing providers. Our members are eager to participate in the conversation to find solutions to our state's housing problems. You can learn more about her testimony below.
Today I was able to attend the Senate Committee on Housing and Development down in Salem to discuss my opposition of Senate Bill 54. Common sense legislation needs to happen in Oregon and housing providers need to be part of the discussion. The financial cost this will require against all housing providers for a bill that is written to solve for a problem that is an emergency health risk for only a few is not sustainable nor does it promote responsible housing investment. The legislature needs to focus on supportive services to help the most vulnerable, and prioritize funding availability for existing programs. Link below for full testimony. https://lnkd.in/gpZyxx5P

The House Committee On Housing and Homelessness today heard from members of the community, including Multifamily NW's Jonathan Clay who spoke in favor of HB 3522, a bill that would amend current law and allow property owners to evict individuals unlawfully occupying their property with a 24-hour written notice. It specifies that a person remaining on the property after receiving a 24-hour notice is subject to eviction and categorizes squatting as unlawful occupancy. Lawmakers would like to make property owners and general construction contractors responsible for worker wages unpaid by subcontractors due to wage theft. Zach Lindahl, Director of Government Affairs, testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee that SB 426 “unfairly shifts liability onto owners and developers who have no direct control over subcontractor payroll practices. Expanding this responsibility not only creates an unpredictable legal risk for housing providers but also discourages new investment in housing at a time when Oregon is struggling with a severe housing shortage.” Read Nigel Jaquiss's story in the Willamette Week for more. https://lnkd.in/gb55UckX
