#OnThisDay in 1959, “chip” co-inventor Jack Kilby filed a patent application for 'Miniaturized Electronic Circuits'. Kilby worked for Texas Instruments. Having not earned a vacation, he was left alone in the laboratory during the summer of 1958, when he showed that it was possible to fabricate a simple integrated circuit in germanium, a commonly used semiconductor at that time. An integrated circuit, or chip, is built up of transistors and other components in a single piece of semiconductor material. Kilby was a successful inventor and was awarded some 60 patents. He is the co-inventor of the pocket calculator, which was one of the first applications using the integrated circuit. A survey run before the pocket calculator was manufactured showed that interest in it was negligible. After all, people had slide rules! Another young engineer, Robert Noyce, developed the circuit in the form that it would later be manufactured - with silicon. Kilby and Noyce are considered to be co-inventors of the integrated circuit, but Noyce died in 1990. Kilby was awarded the 2000 Nobel Prize in Physics. Read more: https://bit.ly/37nxVKn

Yesterday, David Lam invited me to visit Multibeam Corporation where the future of lithography is being invented. Direct write lithography with 25+ beams running in parallel, with autofocus over any kind of topography. When we talk about revitalizing US semiconductor manufacturing, it's good to know that startup companies like Multibeam are bringing this vision to reality. Let's see if we can get a Multibeam system installed at the Institute for NanoSystems Innovation at Northeastern University!
