We are proud to announce that our project, the adaptive reuse of the USC United University Church School for the School of Dramatic Arts (SDA) received both the 2024 Adaptive Reuse Award from the LA Business Council Architecture Awards and the 2024 Renovation/Restoration Award from Engineering News-Record Regional Best Projects. The project, which also includes the seismic upgrade of the historic 1931 structure, transforms and expands the facility to consolidate dramatic arts programs into one building, providing performance, teaching, and student spaces. With a goal of LEED Platinum, the building is an example of highly sustainable adaptive reuse of an historic structure. Engineering News-Record California has recognized TWO of our projects in its 2024 Regional Best Projects awards program. For our transformation of the University of Southern California’s 1931 United University Church into the new home of the university’s School of Dramatic Arts, Perkins Eastman | Pfeiffer received the “2024 Best Renovation/Restoration Project” award. The #adaptivereuse project consolidates the dramatic arts programs under one roof—with a discrete expansion at the rear, providing architectural, structural and building system upgrades, while retaining the iconic #historical features of the building and targeting LEED Platinum. The design team, Stephanie Kingsnorth, Kim McCarron, AIA, LEED AP, Jim Sarratori, AIA, Natasha N. Brewer, and Cesar Murillo, attended the school’s grand opening earlier this year. In addition, #ENRCalifornia named Lincoln International’s Los Angeles office, designed by Perkins Eastman in collaboration with Clune Construction Company, as the “2024 Best Interior/Tenant Improvement Project.” The renovation and expansion increases the firm’s #WestCoast presence while reinforcing its brand identify, and the design implements Lincoln International’s standard approach to the finishes, function, and feel to be cohesive among its other offices across the country. July 1st was Canada day, and in honour of our neighbouring country we are looking back at one of our projects in Canada, the Taylor Centre for the Performing Arts at Mount Royal University. Completed in 2013, the multi-floor facility is designed to LEED Gold certification and includes a concert hall with variable acoustics, ensemble and teaching studios, a recording studio, practice rooms, a multilevel lobby, and a roof terrace providing dramatic views of the campus as well as the surrounding region. The design of the Centre is based on a contemporary interpretation of the rural barn on Alberta’s vast prairies, set against a backdrop of the rugged Canadian Rockies. #perkinseastman #pfeiffer #mountroyaluniversity #performingarts #pac #respectcanadaday

Last week, Perkins Eastman staff, along with Arts and Culture Practice Leader Bill Murray, visited the Estancia High School Theater Complex project site in Costa Mesa. Our summer interns also participated in the tour, gaining valuable insights into how design-phase decisions are transformed into reality during the construction phase. Each commissioning has its own vibe depending on the venue that we’re in. It’s a beautiful, serene atmosphere inside this century-old church that’s been adapted into the new USC School of Dramatic Arts. Between checking hot outlets and setting up DMX universes, we wander the hallways, enjoying the antique woodwork and watching a kaleidoscope of colors dance on the walls from the stained glass windows—the first gobos! ?????????? ? Well, you can partially thank the Crossroads School for Arts & Sciences, for which he and numerous other industry icons are alumni. Founded in 1971, the esteemed college preparatory school is currently building onto its great legacy with a new arts center. The Bezdek Center for the Performing Arts, designed by SPF:a, is set for completion by early 2026 and will feature a 650-seat auditorium and 100-person recital hall, in addition to several filmmaking, rehearsal and music instruction spaces. We can’t wait to see how this new facility will level up Crossroads’ already boss-level creative arts program! ?? ?? ?? ?
