In March 2024, Spelman College launched their Cosmetic Science program as a concentration and minor degree for chemistry students. The college made history by becoming the first to bring such a program to an HBCU. The program aims to address the underrepresentation of Black brands in the beauty industry. Design Essentials, a brand with a 30-year legacy of providing quality and premium hair care, formulated specifically for the unique needs of afro-textured hair, donated $1 million dollars to support Spelman's commitment to STEM-oriented programs and to inspire the next generation of women, students, innovators and leaders. Additionally, the company reserved another $1million donation to Howard University for the launch of The Design Essentials Community Fund to pave the way for Howard University School of Business students who aspire to become entrepreneurs and business leaders. Atlanta-based McBride Research Laboratories is the parent company of Design Essentials and is led by President, Cornell McBride, Jr., a Howard University alum. #beauty #beautynews #beautybusiness #blackowned #HBCU #spelman #designessentials #multiculturalmarketing #blackbusiness #STEM #haircare #blackentrepreneurs #cosmeticscience Cornell McBride, Jr. Design Essentials Spelman College Leyte Winfield #howarduniversity

MCBI has interviewed numerous Beauty entrepreneurs with products that solve the pain points of multicultural consumers. They consistently express hitting brick walls when it comes to access to traditional and creative funding to help support and scale their business. Ceata Lash, Founder of PuffCuff, the hair accessory brand for thick and textured hair, is among the latest Black women founders turning to the brand's customers and the public to help keep the doors of her business open. In this Instagram post, Lash makes an emotional appeal for financial support to keep PuffCuff from running out of cash. Even with satisfactory sales, positive monthly cash flow remains a significant issue for Founders, especially when retailers may take anywhere between 3-6 months to pay for shipments of inventory. PuffCuff and it's lower-priced alternative, Kuffit, are sold online and in retail stores including CVS and Sally Beauty, and has been featured twice recently on HSN. To support PuffCuff, MCBI encourages followers to make a purchase at: thepuffcuff.com, and share this post. #puffcuff #entrepreneurs #blackownedbusinesses #beautyproducts #hairproducts #beauty #beautynews #beautyindustry #multiculturalmarketing #funding #investors Ceata E.
