?? Higher Education has a responsibility to broaden access into public health education. "The success of local health department activities often depends on public trust and community responsiveness, so it is critical to understand factors that foster positive relationships between local health departments and their communities." https://lnkd.in/eJ_-nytF According to Leah Masselink, while about 60% of local health departments have similar representation of BIPOC individuals relative to their local communities, increasing this number by pursuing DEI efforts may be difficult for a variety of reasons: - Public health education programs don't form a neat pipeline into local public health?employment, - Local health?departments already have long hiring processes and high turnover - The higher education environment has become much more hostile to DEI efforts There are no simple solutions, but we must hold higher education institutions accountable to find other ways to broaden access into public health education.

New research out from the Mullan Institute and GW School of Medicine focused on AANHPI representation in the healthcare workforce. They found that while Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders are usually studied and reported on as a group and viewed as a model minority, there are significant variations by sub populations -- some of which are underrepresented in health professions requiring advanced education. The researchers recommend that data be collected in greater detail by population subgroups and that programs to address under representation in health professions include underrepresented population groups.
Thrilled to announce our new paper is out today in Health Affairs! ?? We found that while the Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander population is well-represented overall in the healthcare workforce, significant underrepresentation exists for specific subgroups, including other Southeast Asian and NHPI populations. We also identified a critical underrepresentation of AANHPI individuals in the behavioral health workforce. Our new Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSAgov), HHS funded study found the number of community health workers (CHWs) directly billing Medicaid increased 638% between 2016-2020.?However, by 2020, there were still only 731 CHWs billing Medicaid in the 9 states examined with one state (Ohio) accounting for 77.7% of all Medicaid beneficiaries identified with CHW direct billing.? We found signs of fidelity to the model (e.g. high proportions of CHW billing in the home) and significant billing inconsistencies that signal the need for clarifying and simplifying CHW billing policies. Jacobs Institute Director Julia Strasser spoke with US News & World Report about our recent study in Health Affairs, which found increases in vasectomy and tubal sterilization among young adults following the Dobbs decision: "We know from other research that young adults are paying attention to and making decisions related to changing policy environments – in particular related to abortion – and I do think that young adults are uniquely vulnerable in a way older adults aren’t. They might not have financial support or transportation, or have the type of job that they need to access abortion care or even contraception care. So, there’s a lot of different factors that uniquely affect this population."
