Days 5-10: Did we get stuck on a mountain after a sunset hike? We did. But we also got home safely after the second half of our trip focused on coursework on the studies of economics, history, politics, and, of course, constitutional democracy. We met some fascinating people and cooked a traditional Cape Malay curry with a family in Bo Kaap at the end of our trip. If you're considering this program, I cannot emphasize enough that this is an extraordinary experience. Learning about Apartheid in the very place where it occurred is a life-changing experience. Each of us felt welcomed by the people of Cape Town who cordially shared their histories and culture with us, and we have continued to think about those histories since returning home. If you want to know more, reach out to me. -- Isaac

Day 4: Yesterday, we toured the Cape Peninsula. The Western Cape of South Africa is filled with endless natural beauty, and we got to experience so much of it yesterday. Our tour included observing penguins in their natural habitat and the Cape of Good Hope, the most southwestern point of the African continent. Time has flown by here and I can't believe we only have one week left here!

Day 3: Today, we toured Robben Island. During the Apartheid era, the South African government used Robben Island as a prison for people convicted of common law violations, but more importantly for opponents of the Apartheid regime. Nelson Mandela — South Africa’s first Black president who oversaw the government’s transition into a legitimate democracy — was imprisoned at Robben Island for 18 years.

Day 2: This morning, Kinder professor Dr. Frierdich gave an introductory presentation to the course. Afterwards, we went on a walking tour of District 6, a neighborhood in downtown Cape Town. District 6 was a sophisticated attempt by the Apartheid regime to systematically remove the non-white citizens from downtown Cape Town. In 1970, the government exiled over 60,000 non-white citizens from downtown Cape Town to other parts of the city. We met Susan Louis, a native of Cape Town, who lived in District 6 and was exiled from her home for our 35 years.
