We were excited to welcome Davide Masato from University of Massachusetts Lowell's Plastics Engineering Department for a presentation on #micromolding and his research on simulation and plastics flow at the micro scale. UMass Lowell holds such a strong legacy in plastics engineering and is putting increasing focus on micro molding. A few of us proudly call it our alma mater! With the increase in smart medical devices, advanced tiny electronics are often integrated into implants and devices that go into the body. These small but high-functioning components perform jobs like reading temperatures, storing information, and acting as markers inside the body for surgeons.? ? Micro injection molding over delicate substrates—including full encapsulation—can often improve the part's functionality (e.g., water-resistant or hermetic seal), patient comfort, and the cost-effectiveness of high-volume production. ? Examples of substrates that are great candidates for overmolding include: ? printed circuit boards (PCB)? ? pressure sensors? ? cables and tubing? ? glass? ? ceramics? ? batteries? ? microfluidic chips? ? delicate assemblies ??
