MTA celebrates the accomplishments of African American Charles Brooks, who might also qualify as one of America’s first “environmentalists.” Before horseless carriages became more popular near the end of the 19th century, horse-drawn carriages left plenty of their own form of unpleasant and unhealthy “exhaust” on the streets. While horse-drawn street sweepers already addressed part of the problem, Mr. Brooks earned a patent for his revolving-brush invention that pushed the waste directly into a bin, more thoroughly and efficiently than ever. MTA is honored to commemorate the numerous contributions of African Americans in transforming America’s transit and commerce throughout our nation’s history – because appreciating our different strengths makes us altogether stronger. #MDOTmoves
