Mt Lemmon Hotel

One of the things that makes southern Arizona special is the fact we have mountains that rise out of the middle of the desert to over 9,000 feet tall. These islands create small escapes to beat the heat in the summer or play in the snow during the winter. When your friends or family from the Midwest or Northeast tell you that a foot of snow is no big deal, just remind them that after we’re done visiting and playing in the snow in a short 45 minute drive it’s 70° again.

Marshall Gulch Trail today. Take the Mt Lemmon Scenic Byway (Catalina Highway) from Tucson, Arizona for 25 miles, drive through the small mountain town of Summerhaven and the trail starts at the end of Sabino Canyon Parkway.

The road to the top of Mt Lemmon is 27 miles and takes you from northeast Tucson at the base and ends at Ski Valley, Arizona. It’s a 7,000 foot elevation gain and temperatures drop about 3-3.5 degrees every 1,000 feet. It’s considered one of the most scenic drives in Arizona, crosses multiple climate zones, starts with saguaro cactus and ends with tall ponderosa pine!?? ?? ???

Summerhaven, Arizona on Mt Lemmon is living up to its name tonight with thunder snow. We just left Tucson 40 minutes ago and it was 65 degrees!
