MSU Professional Women Builders

PWB had a great time hosting our 4th annual STEM Career Exploration with the Girl Scouts! ???? The collaboration between the Girl Scouts Heart of Michigan and MSU PWB is a fundamental outreach event for the MSU Construction Management Program, fulfilling the Cadette & Senior STEM Exploration badge requirements. On Saturday afternoon, Girl Scouts listened to a panel discussion led by MSU alumni, followed by a tower build competition and a STEM building scavenger hunt. During the activities, the girls gained an understanding of construction management as a profession, learning about the essential processes involved in planning, building, and managing a project. They learned about key elements such as adhering to schedules and budgets, while also exploring construction best practices, the use of mass timber, and the importance of teamwork and communication in successful project execution. A special thank you to Lia Mastroianni, Rachel Wilber, and Christy Sopocy for taking the time to visit campus to serve as coaches for the event and share their valuable experiences as women in the construction industry. PWB is proud to continue this event, providing young girls with a glimpse into the construction industry at a time when they are beginning to consider their career paths. Had the pleasure of hosting a group of talented students from Michigan State University at our Consolidated Rental Car Facility (ConRAC) project at the Gerald R. Ford International Airport in Grand Rapids, MI. It was exciting to share insights into the real-world applications of the students education and courses, the challenges we face, and the innovative solutions we’re implementing to improve the airport’s infrastructure and campus. The students were engaged, curious, and eager to learn about the various aspects of the project, from design and planning to construction management and most importantly, safety. It’s always rewarding to inspire the next generation of professionals and showcase the practical skills they can develop in the field. A big thank you to the students from the MSU Construction Management Program and groups from the MSU Professional Women Builders and MSU Student Builders and Contractors Association for this opportunity to connect and collaborate with the future leaders of the construction industry! An extra special thank you to Dave Snyder for hosting and presenting as well as Ashley Prince, LEED AP for organzing this great opportunity. To finish off the semester, Wolverine Building Group took MSU PWB students on a tour of recent healthcare renovations. Cyrus Brandenburg, Chad Hall, and Dean Stevens discussed the everyday rewards and challenges of the healthcare division. Students gained insights into a whole new world of construction and quickly sparked interest among the group. This engaging conversation was followed by a walkthrough of the ongoing renovations of the O.R., Mechanical room, and the previously renovated pharmacy. Last week, two of our E-Board members, President Kendyll Borchert and Social Media Chair Alexandra Fongers attended the 2024 Associated General Contractors of America National Convention in San Diego, California. We both had an amazing time attending lectures, learning about new technology, and experiencing all that AGC has to offer. Connecting with industry professionals and student chapters will impact how Professional Women Builders grows and connects with our community in the future.
