MSU Professional Women Builders

Had the pleasure of hosting a group of talented students from Michigan State University at our Consolidated Rental Car Facility (ConRAC) project at the Gerald R. Ford International Airport in Grand Rapids, MI. It was exciting to share insights into the real-world applications of the students education and courses, the challenges we face, and the innovative solutions we’re implementing to improve the airport’s infrastructure and campus. The students were engaged, curious, and eager to learn about the various aspects of the project, from design and planning to construction management and most importantly, safety. It’s always rewarding to inspire the next generation of professionals and showcase the practical skills they can develop in the field. A big thank you to the students from the MSU Construction Management Program and groups from the MSU Professional Women Builders and MSU Student Builders and Contractors Association for this opportunity to connect and collaborate with the future leaders of the construction industry! To finish off the semester, Wolverine Building Group took MSU PWB students on a tour of recent healthcare renovations. Cyrus Brandenburg, Chad Hall, and Dean Stevens discussed the everyday rewards and challenges of the healthcare division. Students gained insights into a whole new world of construction and quickly sparked interest among the group. This engaging conversation was followed by a walkthrough of the ongoing renovations of the O.R., Mechanical room, and the previously renovated pharmacy. Last week, two of our E-Board members, President Kendyll Borchert and Social Media Chair Alexandra Fongers attended the 2024 Associated General Contractors of America National Convention in San Diego, California. We both had an amazing time attending lectures, learning about new technology, and experiencing all that AGC has to offer. Connecting with industry professionals and student chapters will impact how Professional Women Builders grows and connects with our community in the future. PWB ended Women in Construction week with our best turnout yet for this year's STEM Career Exploration with the Girl Scouts! ??♀??? The Girl Scouts Heart of Michigan?x MSU PWB collaboration fulfills the requirements for the Cadette & Senior STEM Exploration badge. On Saturday afternoon, Girl Scouts joined a panel discussion led by MSU alumni, followed by a tower build competition and a STEM building scavenger hunt. Throughout these fun activities, the girls asked insightful questions, delving into construction best practices, mass timber use, and the significance of teamwork communication. Thank you to?Alexandra Fischer, Christy Sopocy, Stacey Nellis, and Traci Brower, LEED AP, CM-BIM?for taking the time to serve as coaches for this activity and leading a panel discussion to teach the Girl Scouts about construction and share their own experiences as women in the industry. MSU PWB is proud to have hosted this event once again, shedding light on the construction industry for young girls.
