Meet Fitz Newton, a PSY major with a minor in Peace and Social Justice, who has participated in the Adolescent Diversion Program (ADP) - first as a student and then on the instructor team. Fitz shared recently about how ADP impacted him, how it has helped shape his career aspirations, and what advice he has to future psychology majors. “This has been one of the best experiences that I’ve had at MSU. Across the state of Michigan, there are hundreds of advocates who help victims of crimes during their darkest days. But the turnover in victim advocacy roles is high. MSU Psychology's Katie Gregory (she/her) and her team at the Michigan Advocacy Network (MiVAN) are working to combat this by offering evidence-based training and resources that empower and support victim advocates. "Advocates may not feel connected to other advocates or resources available across the state which in turn can be isolating. If we can help advocates feel more confident and more informed in the work that they’re doing and the support that they’re giving, then the outcome is hopefully going to be even better for survivors and victims who are coming in for services,” said Gregory. We light an Access Torch for Michigan State University - Department of Psychology PhD student Jessica Saucedo, MA, whose current research focuses on how engaging in Native culture and language supports the development of three- to five-year-old children. “There’s not as much research around preschool age children, even though the three to five-year age is when kids really start watching other people and following what they do. In Wiba Anung, we focus on how cultural and language experiences support the well-being and development of preschoolers.
