This year, the MSA Gallery at the MTC has been home to a diverse range of exhibitions, each exploring unique aspects of architecture, design, and creative expression. From speculative research on AI’s role in placemaking in “Decoding AI”to artistic exploration of life drawing in “To Grow”, these exhibitions reflect the wide-ranging conversations happening within our community. We’ve seen exhibitions that push boundaries—like “Flux: Labs”, which experimented with new city-making practices, “Natural Materials Now!”, which rethought sustainability in construction and many more. Each one has brought fresh perspectives, whether through digital innovation, material exploration, or creative expression. With more exhibitions still to come, the gallery continues to be a space for experimentation, collaboration, and discussion. Stay tuned for what’s next!

We are launching our Film Competition this year, so hurry and get filming! This year the theme is Eyes Beyond the City. ?? Windows, frames and openings have a pivotal rote in "architecture and cinema". They are silent protagonists who offerglimpses into the would of living, capturing light, shadow, perspective and global capture. Using cinematography, you should express these (and not limited to these) ideas and engage viewers into narratives of the human experience through the eyes of the city and beyond. Submission Deadline: 26 May 2025 (Mon) Length: Between 10-20 minutes Format: Digital Eligibility: Open to all current students at Manchester School of Architecture (MSA).

?? A Truly Inspiring Judging Session! ?? We’ve just wrapped up the MSSA WOAH: WithOut A Home Architecture Competition judging session on Wednesday. What an incredible learning experience it’s been. ? I want to extend my deepest gratitude to our judging panel whose expertise and insight made this session so valuable. The conversations went beyond design: diving into the realities of homelessness, the critical importance of stable housing, and how a strong sense of community can transform lives. These discussions reminded me of the true power of architecture: creating spaces that offer safety, dignity, and belonging. What an amazing day at Manchester School of Architecture (MSA) as we welcomed Sir Peter Cook of Archigram and Bartlett fame (amongst many other things) for the day. It was a day characterised by queues, starting with an extensive book signing hosted by The Modernist followed by a “full to the rafters” lecture at The Manchester Metropolitan University which cut across the decades, showcased his amazing talent and bravery in drawing, and explored a myriad of design proposals from urban to rural, heavy to light, linear to blobby, permanent to temporary, and predominantly colourful! Thanks to Manchester Student Society of Architecture (MSSA) and President EnQi Wong for the mid point interview, to Bea Martin for organising and introducing, and to MSA Collective for capturing it all! On a personal level it was great to just hang out for a while, discuss architectural education and reminisce from when he taught me many moons ago. Thank you Peter for such an inspiring time for our students and staff!

Our alumni will deliver 10-minute presentations about their careers since graduating from the Manchester School of Architecture, followed by an open Q&A session where students can ask alumni specific questions about their career experiences. During the event, students will hear inspiring career stories from alumni working in various architectural practices at different stages of their careers. Alumni will also be able to offer students valuable advice and guidance about making the most of their studies and beginning their careers after graduation. Looking forward to being on the judging panel for the 'Social Housing Without Limits' student competition, organised and ran by MSSA WOAH: WithOut A Home on behalf of the Manchester Student Society of Architecture (MSSA) and taking place at the university Manchester School of Architecture (MSA). The competition is a challenge to reimagine social housing as more equitable, enjoyable, and innovative! Students will be judged on their design, user and community consideration such as inclusivity and social impact, practicality and presentation. I'll be judging alongside Alan Lewis, Siobhan Barry, Jenny Etheridge, Tom Partridge, Victoria Kell and Gillian Nettleton. More about Without A Home (WOAH): The University sub-group focuses on raising awareness on the struggles of homeless people in Manchester, as well as organising events which provide help to those in need. Alongside their studies, they run competitions and exhibitions, as well as hosting events with guest lectures from homeless shelter's. From these, they have been able to to raise monies to fund care packages for those facing homelessness - including hygiene products and warm clothing.
