Annual exams are an important part of preventative care for animals (and humans!). It is a great time to have your pet’s diet and care assessed to make sure no changes need to be made. Early detection of diseases can be caught on routine testing and addressed before they become a bigger concern. Dogs and cats aren’t the only ones that can benefit from routine wellness exams. Stumpy (and his sibling Beetlejuice!) are hermit crabs that came to see Dr. Staudenmaier at Angell West for their first annual exams. Their diet and enclosure were perfect and no adjustments needed to be made. Stumpy did have a broken claw, but we’ll be monitoring that closely to make sure it grows back properly at his next molt. We are super excited to have met these adorable little guys and look forward to watching them grow! Our Boston and Waltham locations see exotic pets for wellness exams with our exotic specialists. As we witness the heartbreaking devastation left by Hurricane Helene, we are doing everything we can to bring hope to the animals affected by this disaster. This week, we’ve already welcomed 34 dogs from eastern TN, sweet dogs who were in shelters before the storm hit. These shelters are now overwhelmed as they brace for more displaced animals in the coming days. These dogs have safely made it to us, and soon they’ll be ready to find homes. But the need doesn’t stop there. In Florida, a shelter in Pasco County lost power and is now over capacity. They’ve been struggling to care for their animals, and it’s impossible for them to safely transport their animals locally, so we’re stepping in. We sent staff Florida to help provide a little on the ground relief, and a transport of 15 cats is on its way to us now. These cats are coming at a crucial time, and with our space already tight, we’re holding a special adoption event—Purranormal Cativity—to help find homes for the cats currently in our care. Meanwhile, in North Carolina, we’ve been in touch with Brother Wolf Animal Rescue. Their shelter was completely destroyed by flooding, leaving 150 animals in foster homes. Although those animals got out of the shelter, they are still in danger,as many residents deal with a shortage of fresh water, gasoline, food, etc. Given the worsening conditions it is imperative the animals get out of Asheville, which will also allow the shelter staff to leave the area to safety. We’re working around the clock to get these animals to safety here in Massachusetts, even as communication lines remain down. The situation is fluid but we have offered space for as many as 75 animals, and our team is ready. We anticipate the arrival to happen between Thursday afternoon and Saturday afternoon. In moments like this, we’re reminded how strong we are when we come together - shelters helping shelters, communities stepping up. We’re here, and we need your help to keep going. Wow Wow Wow! H. 4911 has passed the Massachusetts State Senate which updates laws and regulations that limit the timeframe human services employees or contractors can report animal abuse. It also removes prohibitions for DCF adoptive and foster homes based solely on dog breeds, allowing more parents and children to become family. As an organization, we believe a dog should be judged as the individuals they are — not based on outdated and long-ago-disproven stereotypes. This bill helps remove those outdated ideas. Meet Clover, a very brave lady!! Clover is a primary care patient of Dr. O’Bell's here at Angell Animal Medical Center. When she was just a year old, her family noticed her eyes were really bothering her, so they brought her in for a visit. Dr. O’Bell quickly arranged for Clover to see Dr. Biros, one of our ophthalmologists, right here in the same hospital! It turned out Clover had extra eyelashes on the inside of her eye that were irritating her. After some initial plucking and a cryosurgery in August 2021, we’ve been keeping a close eye on her progress. Every six months, Clover returns for check-ups to ensure her comfort and health. We’ve made sure to take things at her pace, with plenty of snack breaks to keep her relaxed. At Angell Animal Medical Center, we are able to provide comprehensive care that connects our patients with specialists when needed. Clover’s story is a testament to how our general care and specialty services work hand-in-hand for the best outcomes. We're thrilled to share that Clover is doing well! During her last visit, she had a couple of distichiae plucked, and our team is pleased with her ongoing progress.

Massachusetts just became the most recent state to pass the Traveling Acts law! Also known as the “Circus Bill,” this legislation prohibits the use of elephants, big cats, primates, bears, and giraffes in traveling shows in Massachusetts. Thank you Office of Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey?for signing this bill into law! Thank you to the advocates across the state who worked so hard to make this happen - your calls, emails, and meetings all mattered! Kelaya Valliere?is a pet illustrator and animal advocate from the Montserrat College of Art. For her final project, she chose to partner with MSPCA Boston, Northeast Animal Shelter, AWS Kennebunk, and the Animal Refuge League of the Greater Portland area to promote rescuing from local shelters and adopting pets of all sizes and ages. Kelaya is thrilled to say that all animals featured in this work have been adopted. We are excited to officially announce that we are leading a coalition of six local animal welfare organizations - Worcester Animal Rescue League, Boston Animal Control, Berkshire Humane Society, Thomas J. O'Connor Animal Control and Adoption Center, and Dakin Humane Society. Our goal is to increase adoptions, reduce euthanasia, and improve the wellbeing of shelter animals in Massachuetts. We will work together to deal with issues that were caused by the pandemic, including a huge increase in the number of dogs entering shelters, and staying there longer. Many of these dogs are in need of more behavior and medical support than before. Given that recruiting qualified behavior personnel is just as hard as recruiting veterinary staff, most shelters aren't able to address this challenge alone, and, without that help, it may not be possible to rehome the animals. As part of the coalition, we'll establish a behavior outreach role to work directly with animals at other shelters while helping coalition members learn remedies they'll be able to use on their own. We're also zeroing in on issues that are unique to specific parts of MA. The coalition's first official act will be a group-wide, fee-waived adoption event for all dogs aged one and up! It will begin 7/15 and run through 7/21 Hours will vary by location and all of the City of Boston Animal Control's dogs will be adopted through MSPCA shelters.
