0 notifications total OPTIMIZATION AND CONTROL: BOUNDARIES ERASED BY FAST COMPUTERS: ?? The distinction between optimization and control is primarily a matter of semantics and is heavily dependent on the implementation. ?? Interestingly, if one possesses the ability to efficiently solve optimization problems in real-time to close the loop, then they essentially have a feedback control law. ?? Consequently, the same algorithm can be perceived as either solving an optimization or a control problem, solely based on the hardware’s capabilities. ?? As computer hardware architectures continue to advance, the line between optimization and control will become increasingly blurred. ?? However, when optimization is integrated into the implementation of feedback control, the classical challenges of control, such as robustness to model uncertainty, time delays, and process and measurement noise, become significantly important, especially for high-performance aerospace systems. It is important to keep in mind that unless one or more of the flowfield’s processes responsible for creating pressure drag are impacted, modifications to the surface pressure distribution will not alter the pressure drag. Therefore, it may be quite deceptive to consider only the surface pressures itself in order to comprehend how a change in the surface pressures can impact the pressure drag. It is important to think about how the modification could impact the strength of any shocks, the lift distribution, or the viscous dissipation in the field. Asking questions like “where in the field is the drag being ‘produced,’ and how is this change likely to affect that process?” is an excellent habit to get into. If asking the question leads to doubt, at least that response is better than being duped by simplistic logic. This concluded part one of "What a DRAG..." series of blogs, and it's important to keep in mind as we dive right into Part II and some slightly more specific and practical issues related to drag effects of surface roughness on turbulent drag friction along with The Turbulence-Modeling Approach where a we description of a method for forecasting the increase in skin friction (Cf) in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations due to surface roughness.
