The Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) has released a statement regarding the March 20, 2025, Executive Order directing the Secretary of Education “to the maximum extent appropriate and permitted by law, take all necessary steps to facilitate the closure of the Department of Education.” “Any such efforts must be focused on ensuring no disruptions for students during these already uncertain times,” said Heather Perfetti, J.D.,Ed.D., President of the Commission. “Our Commission, as a member of the regulatory triad, welcomes discussions with our federal and state partners about how best to serve the public through the continued delivery of services, programs, and benefits currently carried out by the Department for the benefit of students, institutions, and communities.” Congressional authority would be required to close the Department, and, for that reason, constituents are encouraged to outreach to their elected representatives.
