The Mississippi Aquarium was recently featured on the Today Show for our latest Kemp’s ridley sea turtle release. We’re so glad to be able to help with the rehabilitation efforts for this critically endangered species since even before opening our facility nearly five years ago. Today was a great day at the Mississippi State Capitol celebrating the successes of the past year in Tourism with the MISSISSIPPI TOURISM ASSOCIATION! Mississippi Aquarium is proud to participate each year in the press conference by not only attending to show our support, but also bringing along some of our animal ambassadors like Andreas (Gopher Tortoise). This year we also brought a few biofacts! Following the conference, we stepped inside where we were able to visit with our state legislators, Capitol visitors, and the wonderful building staff. During that time, we spoke about our ambassador animals, wonderful things happening at our facility, and couldn’t help but share more information on our newest arrivals - the first penguins hatched in the State of Mississippi. Fun Fact: Gopher Tortises are a native species to this region and are currently classified as endangered. #tourism #mississippi #tourismday #mississippiaquarium

One of the newest additions to our facility is a Deep Water coral exhibit: Secrets of the Deep featuring Rebecca's amazing works of art. See this truly immersive exhibit on your next visit to Mississippi Aquarium! https://lnkd.in/d--Nb7p4
Thrilled and humbled to announce the completion and ribbon cutting of “The Immersion Project” at the Mississippi Aquarium! Years in the making, this project was made possible through generous funding from NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration, National Marine Sanctuary Foundation and the U.S. Department of the Interior. So grateful to our funders, to Sasha Francis, to Alexa Delaune and everyone at the Mississippi Aquarium, and to my wonderful collaborators Erik Cordes Christine Lee, Malte Leander, Austen Camille Weymueller, Mandy Joye. And to the talented Tim Rusterholz. A collaboration between artists and scientists, this multi-sensory installation of sculpture, sound and augmented reality sheds light on some of the restoration efforts in the Gulf of Mexico following the Deepwater Horizon oil spill of 2010. One of the key resources damaged was the deep-sea coral ecosystem, a place that is distantly removed from our everyday experience and yet vitally necessary for life on earth. Cold-water corals sequester carbon, recycle nutrients, and provide habitat for countless species of marine life. The undulating forms of the sculptures are inspired by cold water corals endemic to the Gulf of Mexico. The layered soundscape ebbs and flows with the sounds of the coral ecosystem coming back to life. The hand-painted augmented reality experience creates a dynamic layer depicting a potential ecosystem recovery over hundreds of years. Restoration has never been attempted in the deep sea at this scale, so the work being done by experts to restore these habitats is ground-breaking. Coral scientists are working in federal labs, and partner aquariums like Mississippi Aquarium, to raise some of the cold-water coral species most impacted by the spill and learn more about how they grow and reproduce. At the deep-sea sites, they may even test artificial structures, similar to these coral-inspired sculptures, to act as a skeleton to enhance growth in these important underwater communities. As we continue to develop other manifestations of this project, we hope to deploy sculptures as part of an artificial deep sea reef in the Gulf of Mexico. To be continued! #artandscience #immersiveart #augmentedreality #environmentalart #deepsea #ecological #coral #soundscape #sculpture #mississippiaquarium

Mississippi Aquarium definitely looked like a Winter Wonderland during the Mississippi Gulf Coast's unprecedented snowfall last week! Even though our campus was closed to the public, our animal care, security, and facility/ops crews were hard at work making sure the animals were well taken care of. From feedings, habitat cleanings, enrichment, habitat monitoring, and so much more, there is always something to do, even on a once in a blue moon snow day! Thanks to SuperTalk Mississippi Media for the great write up. We love our media partners. https://lnkd.in/eBrwXgf8

Last week, Mississippi Aquarium President and CEO attended the MS Gulf Coast Business Council meeting where former Governor Haley Barbour spoke to the group about leadership and his time in office. "It was a pleasure to meet Governor Haley Barbour at the Gulf Coast Business Council meeting.?Nobody could have predicted the catastrophe that occurred during his administration, but the leadership that was shown by the Governor was truly amazing. Even though I watched the events from afar, I was absolutely astonished by the incredible heart and resiliency of Mississippi."
