Thank you to everyone who attended and participated in our workshop at Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University (AAMU) on October 29-30. We extend our gratitude to Dr. Kylie Nash, CIO, and Kimberly Davis-Burks, Executive Assistant to the CIO at AAMU, for their support in coordinating and collaborating with MS-CC for this workshop. The workshop featured a series of informative and engaging sessions, including discussions with CI professionals that emphasized the importance of campus funding, maximizing library resources, and investing in campus technology to support research and education at #HBCUs and #TCUs. A key highlight of the workshop was a student-focused session, where participants had the opportunity to engage in hands-on skills training, explore available resources, and learn about career opportunities in data-intensive and computational climate science research. This session included valuable training from the Interactive Workshop: I-WRF Tutorial, led by experts from Cornell University's Center for Advanced Computing and the NSF National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR). Looking ahead to 2025, we are excited to continue our workshops, fostering collaboration and expanding access to CI resources to further strengthen research and education programs at HBCUs and TCUs.You can view the workshop presentation slides on our website:?https://lnkd.in/gWaVW2JP

We are forever grateful to Dr. Harris for his many contributions and engagements with the MS-CC community. He was instrumental in guiding the community conversations, asking thought-provoking questions, and generously sharing his insights.? ? Our time with Dr. Harris may have been brief, but he left a lasting impact on our community that will be felt for years to come. https://lnkd.in/gRTmwKia

The?Minority Serving-Cyberinfrastructure Consortium?National Science Foundation (NSF) -Funded Climate Science Program launched its inaugural undergraduate student internship program in climate science in summer 2024. The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) had the honor of being the host site for the inaugural cohort of the MS-CC Climate Science Program, welcoming 15 talented undergraduate interns from diverse backgrounds. The program aimed to inspire, educate, and empower the next generation of climate scientists through hands-on research and collaboration. This cohort was impressively diverse in areas of study, expertise, and represented one Tribal College and Universities (TCU) and ten Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). The students came from Blackfeet Community College, which was represented by three students, and from various HBCUs including Claflin University, Delaware State University, Dillard University, @Florida A&M University, Fayetteville State University, Hampton University, Morgan State University, Rust College, Shaw University, and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, which had three students in the program. This rich representation reflects the program’s commitment to inclusivity and highlights the importance of diverse voices in the field of climate science and research technology. Throughout the internship, the students participated in six impactful research projects, each guided by esteemed faculty mentors.?Over the course of the 10-week internship, students engaged in two weeks of training followed by eight weeks of intensive team-based research. The internship concluded with a hybrid event showcasing the students’ research, which allowed them to demonstrate their hard work and dedication to their peers, mentors, and the community. You can find the full program and presentation materials on the?MS-CC Climate Science Program web page (https://lnkd.in/d2GsSB35). This inaugural MS-CC Climate Science Program at UMES has laid the groundwork for future professionals in the climate science and cyberinfrastructure fields. By providing students with invaluable research experiences and mentorship, the program not only enhanced their academic and professional journeys but also contributed to the broader dialogue on climate change and its impacts
