Welcome to #AquacultureWeek! Aquaculture (or seafood farming) is vital to growing healthy and sustainable seafood, protecting coastal resources, and supporting coastal communities. If done responsibly as it is in the United States, aquaculture can help meet the demand for fresh seafood in environmentally responsible ways. This week, celebrate the incredible work of those in the aquaculture community who provide valuable jobs and increase access to fresh American seafood while supporting a healthy ocean. The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) shares the news of Pedro Bank Jamaica's queen conch #fisherycertification - certified by yours truly, MRAG Americas ?? See below for the full announcement! https://lnkd.in/ekGij3tr
The?Pedro Bank, Jamaica Queen conch industrial dive fishery?was recently MSC certified on February 28, 2024! This work towards certification has been ongoing by the fishery for at least ten years, where they have worked to meet the requirements of the MSC Standard, beginning with pre-assessments, establishing a sustainable harvest strategy, quota system, and so on. This fishery is unique as it is the first MSC certified fishery for conch and one of only a few MSC certified fisheries in the Caribbean region. The MRAG Assessment team visited Kingston, Jamaica in July 2023 as part of the full assessment process, where they worked with stakeholders, managers, and processors to complete this certification process. The clients - and the entire fishery - just had a big celebration on the 26th?of March, which our assessment team could not attend in person, but submitted videos to on behalf of MRAG. Congratulations to the Pedro Bank Queen Conch dive fishery on their certification!
