I've written before on this: Many startups delay starting the patent process mostly because of the limit in their budget, the complexity of the patent process, and the COST toward them. This I figured out early on in my career as a tech. founder. What I did not expect, was for startups to go through the process, obtain 1 or 2 patents and call it a day BEFORE their product even reaches the market. In high risk ventures, this is like shooting yourself in the foot. It is commonly known that several startups pivot to new applications and markets for their original invention. Their invention changes, as well as their goals. A dangerous place to be for a young company is one with no maneuverability in your patent portfolio. Changes will come from customer feedback, changes due to manufacturing limitations or market conditions that need to be described and captured in the startup's patents. Many patents are drafted narrowly which limits the ability of the inventor to incorporate those changes and are seen all the way through the process and allowed! A granted patent is great, but a granted patent plus a pending patent IS BETTER! It gives you, the inventor, maneuverability. Additionally, those narrow patents we find in many cases are directly related to the startups inability to fund higher cost services, for a substantially descriptive and well written patent application. The leaf blower traces its origins back to 1947, beginning as a backpack fogger invented by the Japan-based Kyoritsu Noki Company. Building on this design, Kyoritsu introduced a backpack blower/misting machine in 1955. By 1968, they had applied for a patent on a backpack blower-mister design.
