Founded in 1955, the mpls downtown council (mdc) is a membership-based entity that works to create an extraordinary downtown. mdc works in collaboration with approximately 440 current members, including businesses of all sizes. Our organization is built on leadership, collaboration, advocacy and innovation. mdc and its membership work toward achieving the goals of the Intersections: The Downtown 2025 Plan in hopes of building an even better downtown mpls for tomorrow. These goals include doubling downtown’s residential population, transforming Nicollet into a must-see destination, creating and sustaining a green infrastructure and showcasing the riverfront, leading the nation in transportation options, advocacy for building U.S. Bank Stadium, ending street homelessness and more. Marshall’s leadership is rooted in a deep understanding of the importance of community collaboration and innovation. As he takes on the role of Board Chair for MDC and DID, he brings not only his professional expertise but also a strong commitment to making downtown Minneapolis a thriving, sustainable, and inclusive space for all.

Minneapolis is growing, and we and many other groups are working to keep that ball rolling downhill. Downtown is a wonderful place to live, and the goal of 100,000 residents in Downtown is part of our 10 year plan. Our Chief of Staff Ben Shardlow shared how and why we think downtown is on the path of continued growth and has tons to offer to downtown residents.

We've got a lot of great things to work on to keep making downtown Minneapolis an amazing place to live, work and, play. We couldn't do it without the support of everyone in this room. For years, I’ve believed—and seen firsthand—that artists aren’t just creators, they are economic drivers. When cities invest in artists, they invest in culture, commerce, and community. The transformation of the Kickernick Building into a thriving creative hub is just the latest proof that when you give artists space, they give cities life. Creative minds deserve a seat at the table—not as an afterthought but as essential voices in shaping the future.
