Black History Month Honors Legacy of Struggle and Triumph Each February, National African American History Month honors the struggles and triumphs of millions of American citizens over the most devastating obstacles — slavery, prejudice, poverty — as well as their contributions to the nation's cultural and political life. National African American History Month was the inspiration of Carter G. Woodson, a noted scholar and historian, who instituted Negro History Week in 1926.?Carter G. Woodson, the son of former slaves in Virginia, realized that the struggles and achievements of Americans of African descent were being ignored or misrepresented. He founded the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH), which supports historical research, publishes a scholarly journal, and sets the theme for Black History Month each year. https://lnkd.in/djedmArq

'Astronomical' Interest Rates: $1B Settlement to Resolve Allegations of 'Predatory' Lending Cancels $534M in Small-Business Debts Through a $1 billion settlement announced by New York Attorney General Letitia James, Yellowstone Capital agreed to wipe out more than $534 million in debt of its small-business clients. It resolves the attorney general's lawsuit alleging Yellowstone ran a large, predatory lending scheme. The settlement canceled debt of more than 1,100 small businesses in New York, and more than 18,000 nationwide. https://lnkd.in/d4UTenmY

Today, we honor the life and work of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. (1929–1968), one of the greatest advocates for human rights in the 20th century. US law firms eye 2025 with optimism: * Heading into 2025, U.S. law firms are upbeat about growth opportunities and the impact of artificial intelligence, as this year shapes up to be a strong one. * Revenue increased an average 11.9% in the first three quarters of 2024 compared with last year, buoyed by 3.2% uptick in demand and a 9% increase in billing rates. * An expected rebound in M&A and transactional work amid interest rate cuts, combined with continued work in areas that had high demand in 2024, position law firms for a positive 2025. * Firms see opportunities to expand in areas including litigation, regulatory, antitrust, transactional, private equity and funds, among others. Technology, healthcare and life sciences, and energy are seen as the top industries for growth. * Outside of the U.S., London is poised to attract the most investment from U.S. law firms, while Singapore and the United Arab Emirates may also see expansion.
