March is Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) Awareness Month Did you know that AMD is one of the leading causes of vision loss in adults aged 50 and older? It affects the central part of your vision, making everyday tasks like reading and driving challenging. Early detection is key, so regular eye exams are essential, especially if you’re at risk. We are honored to have Dr. Steven Cohen provide education to our OD community about Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) Masquerade Syndromes — complex conditions that can mimic AMD symptoms but require different treatments. It’s vital that eye care professionals stay informed about these distinctions to provide the best care for their patients.

Last Friday, ophthalmology offices from all over Kansas City came together for the IJCAHPO Conference—it felt like a family reunion! The EYEXchange Kansas City event featured a variety of insightful topics and speakers. A special shoutout to our tech, Bayleigh Nelson, COA, who presented on "Tailoring Workups for Each Patient". She shared valuable tips on customizing workups to fit the needs of each individual patient, navigating difficult situations, and achieving efficiency while always prioritizing the patient experience. We’re so proud of Bayleigh and excited to see our KC ophthalmology community grow and learn together.

?? Caribbean Sunshine, Life-Changing Surgeries ?? The beautiful Caribbean sunshine is known for its warmth, but those powerful UV rays can take a toll on vision. For our Jamaican neighbors, prolonged exposure to these rays often leads to cataracts, putting their sight at risk. For over 15 years, Dr. Moyes and his team have been performing life-restoring cataract surgeries in Haiti, but due to political unrest, they’ve expanded their mission to Montego Bay, Jamaica. Dr. Moyes shares, "Jamaica is not a failed state like its neighbor to the northeast, but our patients at the mission are just as poor and just as blind. It is a pleasure to come here and bring them joy through sight." This week, Dr. Moyes, his wife, and two technicians are performing 10-15 cataract surgeries per day, restoring sight to those who need it most. Because of the intense sunshine and limited access to eye care, the cataracts in Jamaica are often more advanced, requiring complex surgeries. Together, they’re not just performing surgeries—they’re giving people the gift of sight and hope.

Let’s talk about Glaucoma! Dr. Park shares his insights into the latest advancements in glaucoma treatment and his journey into ophthalmology. 1?? Innovative Glaucoma Treatments Advancements in glaucoma care focus on early intervention to prevent vision loss. New treatments are reducing the need for frequent eye drops, including long-lasting medications that can be implanted in the eye for 1-2 years. Plus, a landmark study shows that selective laser trabeculoplasty, a proven treatment, can slow the progression of vision loss more effectively than drops. While treatments vary, it’s essential to discuss options with a specialist for the best results. 2?? Why Ophthalmology? Dr. Park’s path to ophthalmology started with an interest in pediatrics, but during medical school, he discovered a passion for intricate surgeries that make a real difference. A turning point came when Dr. Geoff Tabin shared his experience treating cataracts in underserved countries, inspiring Dr. Park to pursue a career where he could blend surgery, patient care, and global impact. Dr. Park says he doesn’t have any particularly interesting facts about himself—he considers himself a pretty boring person! Here at Moyes Eye Center, we disagree. ?? #GlaucomaAwareness
