We couldn't finish this week without saying one final THANK YOU to our donors and volunteers who made our DENTAL HEALTH WEEK in the Jamaican Blue Mountains a success! We are humbled, inspired, and most importantly GRATEFUL for your efforts to support the residents of this community. After MPH employees volunteered their time and resources to complete the community health assessment for this community ?? https://buff.ly/4hPFw9c ?? we discovered that oral health is a priority health need. With the help of our incredible donors and volunteers, we were able to operate a primary dental care clinic in Mavis Bank for a week and share educational resources and dental hygiene supplies to community residents throughout the region. This included outreach to local schools! Thank you to the public health super heroes who dedicated their time to this initiative! Want to learn more? You’re looking at the coach of Disease Detectives (epidemiology/public health) for the Science Olympiad team at West Liberty Salem School! ?? ?? Two of my kids are on the Science Olympiad team and they love it (partly because they go to an all-day tournament with their friends and are given a lot of independence while at the tournament! ?? ). The science teacher at the school asked if I would coach Disease Detectives and I of course said yes! (if you’re short on time, skip to the end of this post where I ask for some ideas. I really need them!) ? While preparing for my first weekly session with them, it really struck me how important this is to me and aligns with my values of supporting the next generation of public health professionals. I know my story is not unique in that when I was in middle and high school, I didn’t even know that going into public health was an option. I thought that if you wanted to work in health, you had to become a nurse, doctor, or some other patient-care professional. It wasn’t until after undergrad that I found the field of public health when I was an HIV-prevention health educator in NYC. Then I went to graduate school and the rest is history! However, if I had known about public health early on…it would’ve changed the trajectory of my career path, or at least led to me starting my public health career a lot earlier (and not changing my major over five times! ??♀?). Anyway, I’m just so excited about this opportunity to teach youth about the field of public health! ? Now I need some help: -Ideas to teach the content of epidemiology and make it fun for the class. Yesterday (my first class) I showed a short video about John Snow, did a detective activity around how he found the water pump that was contaminated with cholera, and then made some flashcards on some vocab that they need to learn. Any other ideas? -I want to take them on at least one field trip that is public health focused. Any juicy ideas that kids would enjoy?

I love the work we do here at Moxley Public Health but we mostly love our clients…like Kings County in CA! The work that we do takes a while to properly carry out so we get to know our clients pretty well. The people at Kings County are absolutely wonderful and I enjoyed developing the working relationship together. Congratulations Kings County!

See below to read and hear about Jesse James Clarke pleading to the Ministry of Health in Jamaica for better dental health services and healthcare at rural clinics. He uses Mavis Bank Health Centre as an example just a few days after we had lunch with him and told him everything that was going on there. I’m so excited that he is giving a spotlight to both Mavis Bank Health Centre, the community it serves and this issue in Jamaica. Thank you, Mr. Clarke!
When we were in Jamaica last week (to host dental health services at Mavis Bank Health Centre), we were fortunate to have lunch with the Kingston Mayor's office representatives. We had been corresponding with them and were so excited to have this lunch to tell them in detail (and in person!) what we had helped to do at the rural health center in Mavis Bank ?? One of the councilors/representatives that we had lunch with, Jesse James Clarke, IMMEDIATELY took action and pleaded with the Minister to provide working dental health equipment and regular dental health services to this community - see his full request in the video below ?? Mr. Clark is the kind of person we like and respect the most - doesn't mess around, gets stuff done, takes action, and knocks down barriers! Please watch this wonderful video of him talking about the need for regular dental health services at rural clinics like Mavis Bank Health Centre (where we were!) By the way, Mr. Clark is extremely nice as well! He immediately sent our CEO Stephanie Moxley a message saying how nice it was to meet us, thanking us for our work at Mavis Bank Health Centre, and making sure we got home safely to our families. We like nice people...the world needs more of them and their kindness ?? #publichealth #globalhealth
