?? We recently spoke with Sheriff Donnie Harrison from the Greene County Sheriff's Office about how the #MySheriff app, developed by #ITsimple, has revolutionized communication between his department and the community. Sheriff Harrison shared compelling insights into how this tool has transformed their engagement. Sheriff Harrison emphasized the need for effective communication in a growing community. "We need a way to communicate with everybody, whether they were born third, fourth, fifth generation here, or somebody just arrived yesterday." The MySheriff app allows them to push out detailed notifications, including pictures and locations, making it easier to inform residents about important issues like traffic updates and public safety alerts. ?? One particularly striking moment was when Sheriff Harrison discussed the personal touch the app provides. "If they have a question or an issue, they can send me an email... It makes it personal." This direct line of communication has allowed the sheriff to address community concerns promptly, building trust and showing transparency in their operations. The ability to instantly reach residents and receive feedback has been invaluable, especially for a smaller agency with limited resources. The Law Enforcement Community Engagement Network (LECEN) offers best practices, peer support, industry expertise, and current research for those in community engagement roles within law enforcement. ?? In a recent discussion, we had the pleasure of speaking with Ron Freeman, CEO of ITsimple, about their innovative products, #CityGuards and #MySheriff. Ron shared inspiring insights on how these platforms are revolutionizing community engagement for local police departments and sheriff’s offices. Ron emphasized that CityGuards and MySheriff are mobile-first, cloud-based platforms designed to enhance real-time communication between law enforcement agencies and their communities. These solutions prioritize privacy, requiring no technical expertise or personal data, addressing modern concerns around data security. “We wanted to help our agencies build public trust and develop a positive reputation,” Ron explained, underscoring the importance of transparency and trust in today’s law enforcement environment. ?? A key takeaway was Ron’s observation that many law enforcement agencies rely on social media platforms like Facebook, which younger generations are moving away from. CityGuards and MySheriff fill this gap, offering easy-to-use mobile solutions that promote proactive community engagement. The Law Enforcement Community Engagement Network (LECEN) is a resource providing best practices, industry expertise, and peer support for those in community engagement roles. ?? In a recent interview with Hall, Christi, founder of Chaplains & Heroes, to discuss the evolving landscape of chaplaincy programs. Christi’s insights were both enlightening and inspiring. Christi predicted, "As wellness becomes the buzzword in chaplaincy, more emotionally trained chaplains will come on board to understand trauma, listen well, build relationships, and connect individuals to resources." This shift towards comprehensive training is expected to become a standard across agencies and state governments, making it more accessible and less expensive. ? Christi also highlighted an aha moment: "I think as chaplains and peers are utilized and those benefits are used, then the trust will start to happen with the departments." This coordinated effort between chaplains and peers is crucial for addressing the emotional, spiritual, and physical needs of law enforcement officers while building trust within departments. At the Law Enforcement Community Engagement Network (LECEN), our mission is to professionalize law enforcement community engagement efforts by establishing a trusted network where members can connect, develop, and collaborate. We provide ongoing resources, best practices, peer support, industry expertise, and current research for personnel assigned to community engagement roles within law enforcement agencies across the nation. ?? We recently had the honor of speaking with Sergeant Carlai Moore from the Brookhaven Police Department and Sheriff Donnie Harrison from the Greene County Sheriff's Office about the transformative impact of the #MySheriff and #CityGuards apps, developed by ITsimple, on law enforcement agencies. ? Sergeant Moore provided valuable advice to agencies considering CityGuards. "Change is always hard, but change is needed. Putting everything accessible on a mobile app is a powerful way to reach and grow community engagement." This approach takes the burden off officers and delivers critical information effectively. ? Sheriff Harrison echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the app's adaptability. "Ron works with agencies to get them what they need at a reasonable price. I encourage other law enforcement agencies to adopt MySheriff. It's a good product, and I've yet to find a reason why you shouldn't." One particularly eye-opening moment was when Sheriff Harrison shared how MySheriff addresses common concerns. "People often ask if they're being tracked. No, that's not what this is. It's about providing a trusted communication channel without tracking data." This transparency builds trust and fosters a stronger community connection. The Law Enforcement Community Engagement Network (LECEN) provides best practices, peer support, industry expertise, and current research for those in community engagement roles within law enforcement. ?? We talked to Commander Chester Long from the City of Waco, TX, in a recent podcast, where he shared some compelling insights on how their strategy has shifted towards engaging challenged community members through Faith & Blue events. “These events give us a platform,” Commander Long explained. “A lot of our strategy has shifted to engaging more challenged community members. Many people we’ve met through our faith-based community have faced poverty, substance abuse, and imprisonment. Partnering with these faith leaders, who have come full circle, has been vital.” ?One key realization was the power of shared testimonies. “People can’t always relate to cops, but they can relate to someone who’s lived their experiences. When faith leaders share their stories of transformation, it breaks down defenses. Seeing us interact positively with these leaders shows that change is possible and fosters trust,” Commander Long noted. ?? At the Memphis Police Department, their commitment to community engagement through the Faith & Blue initiative, has led to remarkable transformations. In a recent interview, Police Lieutenant Tadario Holmes shared impactful stories about how this initiative has strengthened their ties with the Hispanic and Asian communities. Lieutenant Holmes highlighted, "They are removing barriers from different segments of the community. One exciting project involves transforming an old precinct into a resource center for the community and a literacy center for the youth. Officers and community members will work together side by side." ? This initiative has not only built stronger bonds with the Hispanic community but has also established new relationships with the Asian and hearing-impaired communities in Memphis, TN. ?? In a recent podcast, Pastor Gabriel Dominguez, Associate Pastor at the Methodist Church in the City of Waco, TX, shared profound insights on how faith-based organizations influence law enforcement culture through community partnerships. Pastor Dominguez emphasized the importance of making community outreach a consistent practice. "We aim for it to be something we do consistently, not just occasionally. Whether it's sponsoring food or engaging creatively with local police departments, the key is consistency," he explained. ? A significant moment from the discussion highlighted the value of starting small. Pastor Dominguez noted, "If you're not already engaging with both law enforcement and the community, start small. Local pastors and congregations can be bridge builders." These insights underscore how continuous, genuine engagement by faith-based organizations can positively impact law enforcement culture, fostering trust and collaboration within communities. ?? We recently had the privilege of speaking with Chris Hsiung, Founding Board Member of The Curve. Chris shared some invaluable insights from his time as Chief of Police in Mountain View and Undersheriff at San Mateo County, shedding light on how these roles shaped his leadership style. One key takeaway was Chris’s emphasis on the importance of vulnerability in leadership. "A leader's responsibility is to set the tone and to show a little bit of vulnerability, too. Leaders who are vulnerable are the leaders who I want to follow." This vulnerability, according to Chris, isn't a weakness but a strength that fosters trust and connection within a team. ?? Chris also touched on his journey of self-discovery as a leader. He admitted it took time for him to become comfortable in his own skin and voice. "I probably wasn't comfortable in my own skin, in my own voice until I was probably my second year as a captain." This realization allowed him to embrace his unique strengths and weaknesses, ultimately making him a more authentic and effective leader. At The Law Enforcement Community Engagement Network (LECEN), we believe in the power of continuous learning and peer support. ? In a recent interview, Ryan Dunlap, Chief Conflict Officer of Conflictish??, discussed the transformative impact of their Real Tact Leadership program. This program is designed specifically for law enforcement executives to enhance their conflict resolution skills through a focused approach. The Real Tact Leadership program emphasizes three pillars: self-awareness, self-confidence, and self-control. Through practical exercises, officers learn to identify their tendencies under pressure, whether they over-engage, avoid conflict, or collaborate too intensely. ? Moreover, Ryan noted: "When we start counting the cost of what conflict has done in our lives, we tend to approach it differently." This program also addresses eight common failures during high-pressure situations, such as challenges with rapport, engagement, authenticity, and timing. By recognizing these issues, officers can transform from conflict escalators to de-escalators, fostering a healthier work environment. Through the Law Enforcement Community Engagement Network (LECEN), we provide best practices, peer support, and industry expertise. ? We recently had a thought-provoking conversation with Hall, Christi, founder of Chaplains & Heroes, about the unique challenges faced by law enforcement chaplains. Christi shed light on a critical issue: "Law enforcement chaplains are not paid," she explained. Unlike military or hospital chaplains who have set hours and compensation, law enforcement chaplains are available 24/7, making it difficult to maintain a regular job. ?? Christi emphasized, "It takes a year and a half to three years for the average chaplain to start building trust in a department." This long-term relationship-building is essential but challenging, especially when immediate, tangible results are hard to measure.
