Channeling all the fear and insecurity we’re feeling right now into action steps feels good. Kicking off this panel with literal legal rockstars Shannon Minter and Nesta Johnson at NCLR – National Center for Lesbian Rights and Mary Bunauto at GLBTQ Legal Advocates & Defenders (GLAD Law) and Meg York at Family Equality to talk about #LGBTQ people, marriage, and parentage was a “I can’t believe I get to do this work” moment. Onward, together!

As the nation grapples with the #2024election results and its broader outcomes, MAP is highlighting Tuesday’s important wins for LGBTQ legal equality in three states: #California, #Colorado, and #Hawaii. ?? In California, voters repealed a constitutional amendment known as Proposition 8 originally passed by voters in 2008. ?? In Colorado, voters repealed a 2006 constitutional amendment defining marriage as between one man and one woman. The state still has a statutory ban on marriage, but that ban is unenforceable because of a 2015 U.S. Supreme Court ruling that legalized marriage equality nationwide. ?? In Hawaii, voters repealed a 1998 constitutional amendment that, while it did not ban marriage for same-sex couples, nonetheless gave the state legislature the explicit authority to do so. "We know the outcome of the election is deeply troubling for many LGBTQ people and their families, as well as diverse communities across the country. We stand ready to support advocates, policymakers, the media, and the public in understanding what policy proposals may mean, while shaping conversations about the key issues. No matter what comes, MAP is made for these moments. We believe in the ability to have hard conversations, to find shared values, and to move us ever closer to opportunity and equality for all. All of our programs: LGBTQ, Democracy, and Open to All are incredibly important — today and in the days, months, and years ahead." ??
