Reproductive Healthcare is about much more than who gets to decide if a woman has a baby. Whether you want to have a baby or you don't want to have a baby, we have an enormous reproductive healthcare problem in our country. Data and map sourced from MARCHOFDIMES: 35% of US counties are maternity care deserts. More than 150,000 babies were born to birthing people living in maternity care deserts. An additional 200,000 babies were born to birthing people living in counties with limited maternity?care access. More than 2.3 million reproductive aged women live in maternity care deserts. Over 3 million additional women live in counties with limited maternity care access. Living in a maternity care desert is associated with a 13% increased risk of preterm birth. Over half of counties in the US do not have a hospital that provides obstetric care. In 2021 and 2022, approximately 1 in 25 obstetric units?closed nationwide. Nearly 70% of birth centers are located within just 10 states. 2.5 million reproductive aged women live in a county without an obstetric clinician. Only 27 states and DC grant full practice authority to Certified Nurse Midwives (CNMs). See the whole (depressing) report here: https://lnkd.in/g3bEZ9G9 #reproductiverights

At a recent pre-election session about how many Americans were on a steady diet of Fox News, someone commented that it is because Fox News is free and other news sources (e.g., CNN and MSNBC) are not. But, even that is fake news. You need a subscription to watch Fox Corporation (though I don't recommend it for your diet; it will leave you bloated and full of hot air). You know what you don't need a subscription to that provides OUTSTANDING news coverage: NPR. Public media is a service and NPR is great at it.

Although his message is a call to action for elected officials and lawyers across the country, it is an important one for every American. I hope you will read and share widely. https://lnkd.in/e5ZHbNEk

At MoveIndigo, we frequently hear from folks who are looking to move to states that will protect their reproductive rights. We are always eager to help them...and to nudge them to pick states and communities where they can not only have their own rights protected but can also help protect reproductive rights (and lots of other important rights) for our country. That means moving to swing districts, typically in blue or purple states. Where are these magical places (and they really are magical!)? The Hudson Valley and Long Island in New York AND most of Maine AND huge portions of Colorado AND several fabulous districts in California. If you are looking for abortion access or maternity care, all of these places deliver. And you can be a Democracy Hero by helping to swing the vote blue. #moveindigo #votewithyourfeet #reproductiverights

Our interactive map includes a new protective category after an update to our methodology. Now, you can see states whose shield law protections extend to telehealth. This policy aims to protect abortion providers from legal action—no matter where their patients are located. -8 states (CA, CO, MA, ME, NY, RI, VT, WA) have this protection. -As a result, CA, RI & WA have moved up in our protection rankings! -We also reviewed our category around data privacy protections for patients seeking repro health care and Virginia has also moved up! Per the most recent data (2023), 36,000 residents per quarter (collectively) are leaving the 13 states with total abortion bans immediately following the Dobbs decision, due to these bans. Assuming the same effect over a five-year period, there would be very nearly a 1% population loss for states banning abortion as opposed to ensuring abortion access. In Texas alone, the outflow would be more than 300,000 individuals leaving for more protective places. States with abortion bans are having trouble attracting medical practitioners. For example, applications from medical students for residency positions in obstetrics and gynecology in abortion-banning states fell 11.7% in 2023 from the previous year, and by another 6.7% in 2024, according to the Association of American Medical Colleges. Undergraduate and graduate students are also factoring state abortion policies into their decisions.? According to Gallup and the Lumina Foundation research, almost three-quarters of college students factor laws governing reproductive health into their decision of whether to stay enrolled in their current campus or leave. Winston Churchill taught us to never let a good crisis go to waste. If you are moving to a place where your reproductive rights will be protected, please also choose a place where your vote will also be a gamechanger so we can gain the political leverage we need to make reproductive health care a national right again. https://lnkd.in/empJaD5h #reproductivehealth #womensrights #abortionrights

Following successful ballot measure campaigns in the 2024 election by organizers in New York and Colorado, abortion rights are now protected in both state constitutions! In Colorado, Medicaid coverage for abortion care is also no longer restricted due to these protections. Colorado’s category on our interactive map now shifts from “Protective” to “Very Protective” and New York’s category remains at “Very Protective.” As we face attacks on reproductive freedom from the Trump administration, protecting abortion rights and access at the state-level is even more essential.
