As of 2024, mental health issues are highly prevalent in the United States. Approximately?23% of adults—nearly 60 million people—experience some form of mental illness each year. Serious mental illnesses, which are more severe conditions, affect?5.5% of the population, equating to around 14 million adults. These conditions can range from anxiety and depression to more chronic disorders like schizophrenia and bipolar disorder(Mental Health America)(NIMH). Mental health challenges are especially pronounced among young adults. For those aged 18-25, the prevalence of mental illness is the highest at?33.7%, indicating that one in three young adults is struggling with mental health issues(NIMH). Additionally, over?13% of youth?report serious thoughts of suicide, making this a pressing concern, especially among vulnerable groups(Mental Health America). Despite the significant number of individuals affected,?more than 50%?of those with mental health issues do not receive any treatment. This gap highlights the ongoing challenge of access to care, with barriers like cost, insurance coverage, and provider shortages still hindering the availability of mental health services(NAMI)(Mental Health America). This snapshot of mental health in America underlines the importance of addressing both the need for improved mental health services and increased awareness around mental health care accessibility. Though I'm not a licensed mental health professional, this subject is deeply personal to me. I've witnessed the impact of mental health struggles within my own family, with my patients, and even with students I have taught. It's a reminder that this issue touches all of us in some way. So, what can we do? For me, it's about showing up—educating those around me, advocating for my family, patients, and students, and spreading the message that mental health & movement matters. Exercise isn’t just about physical health; it’s a powerful tool for mental well-being. By embracing this connection, we can foster resilience, compassion, and strength in ourselves and those we care for. What can you do to address this serious issue?

Pickle ball injuries are on the rise with the growing popularity of the sport. I love pickle ball & here in Bend, OR, there is no slowing of the sport. Additional courts and playing time are added each year; most recently in our town with the addition of court lights so players can play until 10pm. Did you know that pickle ball injuries increase with increasing age? In fact, most of the injuries are not in the younger populations but in those > 50 years old. It's an inexpensive sport with a quick learning curve, and it can entice the older adult who may have previously been more sedentary. Plus it's a social experience with clubs, lessons, and getting together with friends. I certainly don't want to deter anyone from playing, but I encourage more healthcare professionals to advocate for proper warm up, stretching, agility drills, strength training, and conditioning for those older individuals who are more prone to injury. Geriatric pickle ball injuries are on the rise and we need to be pro-active in prevention of injury. Your thoughts?
