  • Stress from work led to poor eating habits, lack of sleep, and limited exercise for Sue Dumbauld—until a heart rate warning from her Apple watch signaled something was seriously wrong. Born with a congenital heart condition, aortic stenosis, a condition in which the aorta is narrow or blocked, Sue had already undergone three open heart surgeries. The Apple Watch alert was the first indication that she would need yet another intervention. In June 2024, an echocardiogram and admittance to the hospital for additional testing revealed she needed a fourth—and it couldn’t wait–she had heart failure. The surgery was scheduled for September, but her worsening condition and symptoms pushed her surgery up by 12 days. At The Mount Sinai Hospital, Dr. Ismail El-Hamamsy and Dr. David Adams performed a complex Ross procedure with mitral and tricuspid valve repairs—replacing or repairing all four heart valves without the need for lifelong blood thinners. Dumbauld has since slowly rebuilt her strength. About four months after surgery, Sue is back to living life fully—traveling the world and planning her next adventure. • After spending four years bedridden with relentless pain and nausea, Nic Birgler’s life was at a standstill. Unable to work or complete everyday tasks, they struggled with persistent nausea, vomiting, and confusion without any clear answers. It wasn’t until Nic was referred to Dr. Madeline Fields at Mount Sinai and evaluated using the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) to track and monitor their seizures. The root cause of their condition was finally identified, offering hope for a path forward. #WeFindAWay?#Epilepsy?#EpilepsyAwareness #EpilepsyMonitoring #Neurology?#PurpleDay

  • Have you noticed more frequent headaches when the air quality is poor? You’re not alone! Previous studies have shown that wildfire smoke contains fine particles that can trigger inflammation, and since headaches and migraines are symptoms of neuro-inflammation, poor air quality could be a major culprit. According to Dr. Fred Cohen, a Headache Specialist at Mount Sinai Health System, his recent study analyzing data from the Canadian wildfires of June 2023 found that headache-related medical visits increased by up to 31%. The study, which examined data from Mount Sinai, Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx, and Jefferson Headache Center in Philadelphia, highlights this potentially concerning link between air pollution and headaches. If you suspect your headaches may be related to air quality, consider keeping a journal to track when they occur and noting the Air Quality Index (AQI) for that day. This information can be valuable when discussing your symptoms with your primary care physician. #WeFindAWay #neurology #headache #airqualityindex
