Mountain Lake was established in 1916 by Frederick S. Ruth, who employed Frederick Law Olmsted, Jr. to lay out the 600 acre Park and Seth Raynor to design the golf course. The Colony House, a private hotel for members and their guests, is justly listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Today, the tradition of a winter colony lives on, and Mountain Lake is open to its members from November 1-April 30. The corporation operates businesses of hospitality, real estate, agriculture, and water management.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Michelle Shannon, a cherished member of the Mountain Lake team since 2007. Michelle’s husband shared that she deeply loved working for Mountain Lake and was grateful for the wonderful company she had the privilege to be a part of. Michelle had a great passion for the outdoors, with hunting and fishing being some of her favorite pastimes. She was also an avid FSU football fan and had a special fondness for the color green. Sunsets were something she eagerly looked forward to each day, and she found peace in watching birds from her porch. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
