Empowering communities, managers, & scientists to innovate solutions through mountain research, education & practice.
关于我们
We empower communities to utilize science and innovate solutions that address current and legacy issues and to improve our communities’ quality of life. Mountain Studies Institute (MSI) is an independent not-for-profit mountain research and education center established in 2002 in Silverton, Colorado. MSI develops science that people can use to address environmental issues facing the San Juan Mountains. We conduct and facilitate research, provide educational opportunities and internships, and conduct environmental monitoring. We connect scientists and stakeholders across the San Juan Mountain region to go beyond scientific inquiry to the meaningful application of knowledge that makes a difference for the quality of the environment and our communities.

Our hearts go out to all our federal and nonprofit partners who are also impacted by these funding freezes and cuts. MSI is going to do all we can to continue our important work in the forests and watersheds of the San Juans, but the road ahead is full of uncertainty. You can help by donating, and by speaking out about both the positive impacts federal dollars have in our communities, and the negative impacts of momentum lost and good work gone undone when they are so suddenly cut. MSI is proud to be a non-advocacy organization and the science, education, and restoration work we do has no political affiliation. We hope all are able to see that fire prevention and watershed restoration are sound investments of federal dollars, especially compared to the alternative of disaster recovery. https://lnkd.in/gTmwX73R

Tuesday 12/10 is #ColoradoGivesDay! I feel so incredibly lucky to go to work everyday at Mountain Studies Institute and connect communities to science people can use to face our most pressing environmental challenges. So much in the national news is depressing and hopeless, and I'm proud to say that the work we're doing truly gives me hope. I know that when we work together in community to better manage our shared resources, we are making a difference. It sounds cliche to say we're making the world a better place, but how does that actually happen? Making a kid's day better by getting them outside and sparking their curiosity for the natural world. Getting volunteers together to plant seeds and stop erosion in a beautiful alpine fen or a burn area. Building relationships and trust between land managers and communities to make decisions that include our shared values. Using science to find new and better ways of restoration and forest management so our limited resources go further in a changing climate. This is important and necessary work, and I believe that together, we're making a difference. I'd love for you to join us and support our campaign for #swcogives You can donate today at https://lnkd.in/gz8DaZnu

What an all-star team! We are excited to work with this interdisciplinary group of problem solvers on the complex issue of dust on snow.
We are pleased to introduce the interdisciplinary group of problem solvers participating in this year’s Field Stations research program. These professionals will contribute insights from environmental science, ecology, agriculture, conservation, engineering, policy, education, community engagement, design, and other fields to envision new solutions for a complex ecological concern.? ? Over the next few months these problem solvers will develop applied research projects that address dust mobilization and align with the needs and values of the affected communities. We will share highlights from the progress here and the full proposals and findings will be presented at a symposium in Colorado in the fall. ? ? Read more about the group of problem solvers and our core team, below! ? #dustonsnow #fieldstations #colorado #snow #climatechange #research #environmentalscience #conservation #education #wrightingraham #mountainstudiesinstitute? ? https://lnkd.in/eyF2j47U
