Mount Sinai Leads New NIH-Funded Initiative for a Diverse Health Database. We’re proud to announce that Mount Sinai Health System has been awarded nearly $7 million by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to take the lead in a New York-based coalition, dedicated to creating one of the most inclusive and comprehensive health databases in history. This initiative aims to shape individualized treatment and care for a wide range of diseases by advancing data diversity. This coalition brings together renowned academic medical centers and community partners—including Weill Cornell Medicine, NYC Health + Hospitals, The Institute for Family Health, and NYU Langone Health—focused on engaging, recruiting, and retaining participants who are often underrepresented in biomedical research. By leveraging New York City’s unique cultural and ethnic diversity, we’re enhancing health equity and bridging gaps in medical research. Mount Sinai is proud to have esteemed investigators leading this effort, including Principal Investigator Dr. Monica Kraft, along with Dr. Bruce D. Gelb, Dr. Carol R. Horowitz, and Dr. Girish N. Nadkarni. “This multi-institutional effort will fill a gap to significantly increase recruitment of participants in an area of the country with rich diversity,” said Dr. Kraft, Chair of the Department of Medicine at Mount Sinai. In addition, Mount Sinai and our partners will work to enroll 3,300 new participants with opioid use disorder, a crucial step in addressing this devastating crisis, especially among communities disproportionately affected. We are honored to lead this historic effort to improve precision medicine for all. Stuart Kaplan, MD, discusses a new study that showed that ultrasound waves elicit an anti-inflammatory response in humans. He said, “Inflammation can be a symptom of many conditions, but is intrinsically linked to autoimmune diseases. Current treatment options start with over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications like ibuprofen or naproxen, but once inflammation increases beyond the benefits of these medications, the side effects also increase.” https://lnkd.in/eYhUauXZ

Important and innovative work by Mount Sinai Division of Hospital Medicine hospitalist Michael Herscher and colleagues addressing the opioid epidemic. Just published in Substance Use & Addiction Journal their novel program using an automated daily list generated by a bioinformatics search algorithm to identify and engage patients with OUD. Over a 2-year period, 178 patients evaluated, 88 eligible for buprenorphine, of which 47 (53%) started on buprenorphine. At 1-year, 16 patients remained on MAT. That's 16 lives changed. An essential part of achieving health equity is the fair collection of genomic data, ensuring that informed health care decisions can reflect the unique, diverse genomes of all cultures. Currently, there is a lack of diversity in genomic research data. This limits what we can uncover about health and potential treatments for our global population. Expanding diversity among participants in genomic research can bridge these gaps, advancing our understanding of human genetics for all communities. One ambitious initiative that strives to diversify this data is the Mount Sinai Million Health Discoveries Program. Dr. Alexander Charney explains: “Our goal is to develop personalized treatments tailored not only to the disease but to the individual’s genetic makeup, which we know varies significantly across populations.” Learn more: https://bit.ly/4fHMlZ8

Researchers at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai have unveiled strategies for integrating large language models (LLMs)—a type of artificial intelligence (#AI)—into health systems, balancing cost efficiency with high performance. “Our findings offer a road map for health care systems to use advanced AI tools effectively, potentially reducing API call costs for LLMs by up to 17-fold, while ensuring reliable performance even under heavy workloads,” says co-senior author Girish N. Nadkarni, MD, MPH. “Our goal was to address the challenges of scaling LLMs in health care by identifying practical ways to cut costs without sacrificing functionality. We ‘stress tested’ these models to see how they perform with multiple tasks simultaneously and developed strategies to maintain efficiency and stability,” adds first author Eyal Klang, MD, Director of the Generative AI Research Program in the D3M at Icahn Mount Sinai.
