Today I had a wonderful visit with Dr. Jennifer Jensen, President of Mount Liberty College, a growing liberal arts college in Utah where the students' education is centered on actually reading and discussing the original works of great thinkers throughout history and letting students come to their own conclusions. This is what higher education should be!

"The first territorial governor of Utah,?once stated?that “education is the power to think clearly, the power to act well in the world’s work, and the power to appreciate life.”?He also argued?that “our education should be such as to improve our minds and fit us for increased usefulness; to make us of greater service to the human family.” Notice that he doesn’t even allude to the notion that the sole focus of higher education should be to obtain a marketable certificate or degree. A liberal arts education helped make J.K. Rowling capable of writing the Harry Potter series. Do you know where she got the name Hermione? Or why Voldemort is a snake? There are reasons and those educated in the classics can make the connections. Just a taste of the article below: "This is not an entirely new phenomenon. As a teenager, Rowling wanted to study English literature at university, but her parents preferred she choose a subject that would keep her out of poverty. “I would like to make it clear, in parenthesis, that I do not blame my parents for their point of view,” Rowling said, wisely, to a generation that famously resents its elders. “There is an expiry date on blaming your parents for steering you in the wrong direction; the moment you are old enough to take the wheel, responsibility lies with you.” "In the end, Rowling studied classics—not quite what her parents had in mind. “Of all the subjects on this planet, I think they would have been hard put to name one less useful than Greek mythology when it came to securing the keys to an executive bathroom,” she joked.
