  • Meet Aiden one of our Little Victors from our 2025 calendar. “In March 2024 Aiden was diagnosed with a strep infection of his skin. A few days later he was rushed to our local ER with abdominal pain, increasing blistering rash and a new rash to his bilateral legs that was rapidly spreading. At this time, he underwent blood work, urinalysis and an abdominal ultrasound and was diagnosed with Henoch-Sch?nlein purpura (HSP). During the past six months, Aiden’s HSP has worsened. He has undergone a kidney biopsy, which has revealed IgA nephropathy, and he has been admitted to the hospital five times. Today, Aiden continues to have intermittent abdominal pain and HSP flares and is set to begin intravenous Rituximab. Despite his illness, Aiden continues to play baseball and soccer.” Hail, Aiden!

  • Within 24 hours, Lev’Veon went from a healthy 10-year-old playing at his sister’s birthday party to flatlining in the ICU from a sudden cardiac arrest. As the fifth grader’s condition deteriorated rapidly, requiring 60 minutes of CPR, pediatric heart teams at C.S. Mott Children's Hospital determined there was only one option to try to save his life. But it involved a high-risk surgery that had never before been performed on a child in the state: a total artificial heart implantation. It meant around the clock training for Mott teams to prepare for the procedure in a few short days. And Lev'Veon became one of the smallest and youngest patients in the world to receive the device, allowing his organs to recover and helping him become strong enough to receive the heart transplant he needed. “It was a true ‘Hail Mary,’” his doctor, David Peng, M.D., says. • ?? March 26 is Purple Day, a global event to raise epilepsy awareness. It's also the anniversary of Max's diagnosis. His family learned he had epilepsy nine years ago today. Max, now 13, has one of the severest forms of the disease, called Lennox-Gastaut syndrome. The condition is medication-resistant and involves multiple types of seizures that he will likely not outgrow. His family shares their story every year to help people understand more about the neurological condition that affects both physical and emotional aspects like going to school, having a job, driving, learning difficulties and mental health. “I want people to know my brain is working hard to stop the seizures, but it is hard,” Max said. We were honored to host Congresswoman Debbie Dingell and Governor Gretchen Whitmer at C.S. Mott Children's Hospital in a panel discussion featuring several of our leaders, as well as participants from Corewell Health, Trinity Health, Henry Ford Health and the DMC. This roundtable, moderated by the Michigan Health & Hospital Association, discussed the importance of Medicaid and how it has served as a lifeline for patients and families.

  • Meet Deverik one of our Little Victors from our 2025 calendar. “Deverik was born in June 2017 and, at 4 months old, he came down with his first cold and was sent to cardiology after his pediatrician was concerned with his blood oxygen saturation levels. The echo showed that Deverik had a congenital heart defect called atrioventricular septal defect (AVSD). He successfully underwent open-heart surgery in June 2021, just two weeks shy of his fourth birthday. Surgery never slowed him down and he continues to do fantastic! We are so grateful to Dr. Sood and the entire team of professionals who have helped Deverik up until this point!” Hail, Deverik!

  • Meet Lila one of our Little Victors from our 2025 calendar. “At our 20-week ultrasound we found Lila was diagnosed with mosaic trisomy 16 leading to a very complex congenital heart defect: pulmonary atresia, right aortic arch, complete AVSD, intracardiac TAPVR, heterotaxy, dextro-Transposition of the great arteries, and bilateral SVC. Lila endured many open chest procedures. Lila was diagnosed with a Morgagni hernia and malrotated intestines, requiring surgical intervention. She underwent three more heart procedures and required to be on ECMO. Lila was then diagnosed with airway malacia and bronchus suis, conditions for which there were no medical interventions available. Our hearts ache as we remember Lila, who became our forever angel on November 5th, 2023. We want to thank EVERYONE at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital for all their hard work and dedication to the LITTLE VICTORS!” Hail, Lila. ?? ??
