We recently had the opportunity to sit down with Open Pixel Studios to chat all things MoM. Thank you so much for having us on!

Add to the list of moms getting things done: Allyson Felix advocated for the first-ever nursery for athletes with kids at the Paris Olympics - and made it happen! It'll be located where the athletes live so they have a space for private time with their babies to help alleviate some of the pressures of competition. She knew how difficult it was to compete as a mom, was determined to be the voice for athlete parents and took action. What I loved most? Her reaction to the message this support for parents sends: "I think it really tells women that you can choose motherhood and also be at the top of your game and not have to miss a beat." And this is how we break the false tradeoff between parenthood and career. #parenting #workingparents

How do you have a baby and keep a business alive? ??♀? I was not prepared for how hard this would be on my first maternity leave. The stress of being self employed with a new baby resulted in: ?? Delayed post-partum depression & burnout ?? Closing my business of 6 years down ?? Pivoting to set up Nugget Savings and becoming OBSESSED with talking about parental leave This is what lit the fire ?? in my belly to transform parental leave in the UK. This is my 'why' for Nugget Savings. We ram our content full of education and tips and tricks I *wish* I knew about parental leave before my first baby. Whilst there's been plenty to say for the employed - lots of protections shine a light on, 'hacks' for holiday, tips for increasing maternity pay... when it's come to the self-employed we've been a bit scant of advice ?? So a couple of months ago I asked LinkedIn - how do you have a baby if you're self-employed?! What's the magic trick? ??♀? A ton of comments flew in - lots tagging the wonderful Frankie Tortora from Doing It For The Kids - recommending her podcast & community as a wonderful resource for self-employed parents. We hope everyone got to know Collin and her amazing work! I loved how she found her own rhythm in motion design. We have one last question. Share your favourite parenting story (Win or Fail): A: This is basic, but seeing my 3-year-old enjoy, create, and savour music feels like a huge win. A bit about this project: I always love seeing behind the scenes in other peoples work, so here's mine! It's fun to see a squishy painterly landscape in the middle of this gridded, harsh 3D software environment. Actually I feel like the two together are more interesting than just the landscape itself. Q: Collin, What advice would you give to women just starting their careers in motion graphics or animation? A: Don't try to make your work look like whatever is trending. Make mood boards that consist of NON animations. This means you'll have to keep your eyes open and document! Whatever it is- architecture, fashion, stamp collecting, bugs, 1960s Brazilian romance novel covers, medieval music notation, fashion- there are so many random, fascinating, beautiful things in the world to inform your work. Try to get a sense of what you like outside of what's trendy right now. That's an illustration-heavy piece of advice, but the same goes for animation - watch things outside the realm of this industry! A bit about this project: These are musical loops I wrote inspired by my kids. I'm a violinist and I got into animation because I was a painter and a musician, and I wanted the two to be able to speak to each other. The paintings needed to be time-based! So I'm lucky that sometimes I can compose music for my animations. The first two musical swoops are written in 3/3, as in a rhythm of three, because we were a family of 3. But I was pregnant with my second child and was setting up a baby announcement in 4/3, with four beats instead. I don't usually just use cel animation - I'm usually trying to pull in tech somehow. But we went camping and didn't have any internet, and I ended up drawing on my iPad and made this first loop. Kids voices are so sweet, I added my son saying 'I have juice' and it felt like a little ode to him in summertime. I animated the baby announcement before my daughter was born, so once I was recovered a little bit, I composed the music and included some little baby sounds. The rhythm was me rubbing her back.
