Families are taking on debt, working multiple jobs, enduring long commutes, and sacrificing careers—all because of a broken childcare system. But it doesn’t have to be this way. In a powerful interview with The Guardian, our Founding Director, Danielle Atkinson, sheds light on the crisis parents—especially mothers—face and asks the crucial question: How did childcare in the U.S. become so bad, and what would it look like if we fixed it? Mothering Justice is leading the charge to reimagine childcare as a public good—one that values caregivers as educators, pays them fairly, and ensures every family has access to high-quality, affordable childcare. ?? March 25 is Equal Pay Day 2025 ?? Women are still being paid less than men, and for childcare providers, the gap is even wider. The people caring for our children, overwhelmingly Black and Brown women, are making poverty wages while keeping our economy running. It’s time to value caregivers. No one should struggle to afford the very care they provide. This #EqualPayDay, Mothering Justice is calling for fair wages for childcare providers.?? ??? Join us in the fight for economic justice. Mamas deserve better. Families deserve better. And we won’t stop fighting until they get it. The Congressional?Mamas’ Caucus is committed to advocating for policies that center mothers—especially mothers of color—because we know that when mamas thrive, communities thrive. ?? Childcare remains unaffordable, yet providers aren’t paid a living wage. ?? 30+ million workers lack access to paid leave. ?? Black mothers in Michigan are facing a maternal health crisis. ?? Reproductive justice is under attack. The cost of raising a child in America is one of the highest in the world—but our policies continue to leave working families behind. We refuse to accept this status quo. Mothering Justice is on the frontlines fighting for change. Will you stand with us? ?? Last week, we joined forces with Think Babies Michigan, Michigan Association for the Education of Young Children (Michigan AEYC), Early Childhood Investment Corporation, and the National Head Start Association for the third annual Early Childhood Capitol Day 2025! ?? Families, early childhood professionals, and advocates from across Michigan gathered at the State Capitol to urge lawmakers to prioritize young children and families in the FY26 budget. A key message? Without proper financial support, daycares and early care programs will continue to close—leaving families without access to the quality, affordable child care they need. When caregivers, educators, and parents speak, legislators must listen! To everyone who showed up, shared their stories, and fought for change—thank you. Together, we are pushing for a future where every child and family thrives. ???? https://lnkd.in/e5yRkmdF

?? Advocating for Livingston County’s Youngest Learners at Early Childhood Capitol Day! This week, Robin Schutz and Breanne Green proudly represented the Great Start Livingston Collaborative and Family Coalition at Early Childhood Capitol Day 2025 in Lansing! We were joined by Madeline Garcia, CFRE, a dedicated mom from our Family Coalition, who came to advocate for her 3-year-old son. Like so many parents, Madeline has struggled to find child care that can support her disabled child—a challenge that leaves families without options and prevents parents from participating in the workforce. We had the opportunity to meet with staffers from the offices of Senator Lana Theis, Rep. Jason Woolford, Rep. Jennifer Conlin to share the real struggles families are facing in accessing early childhood care and education. Throughout the day, we: ? Learned from experts about the state of early childhood education and policy gaps in Michigan ? Discussed the impact of early childhood investments in the state budget, including child care funding, home visiting services, and maternal health ? Shared real stories about how underinvestment in early childhood programs affects families and providers—including Madeline’s story ?? Why does this matter? In Livingston County alone: ?? 15% of children under 6 live below 200% of the federal poverty level ?? 70.3% of children 0-6 have all parents in the labor force ?? The average cost of full-time early care is $11,208 per year, making it unaffordable for many families ?? Families of children with disabilities face even greater barriers—many child care providers are not equipped or supported to serve children with special needs ?? Our priorities include: ?? Increasing Child Development and Care (CDC) scholarship reimbursement rates to reflect the true cost of care ?? Expanding Early On Michigan to support children with developmental delays ?? Maintaining funding for Healthy Moms, Healthy Babies to improve maternal and infant health ?? Strengthening home visiting programs, especially in rural areas ?? Advocating for continuous Medicaid coverage for children from birth to age six ?? Expanding access to Help Me Grow Michigan, ensuring all families can easily connect with resources ?? Ensuring child care programs are funded and supported to serve children with disabilities, so no family is left without options ?? A huge THANK YOU to the sponsors who made this event possible: Early Childhood Investment Corporation Think Babies Michigan Michigan Association for the Education of Young Children (Michigan AEYC) Michigan Head Start Association Mothering Justice Early childhood investment is workforce investment. No family should have to choose between caring for their child and earning a living. It’s time to ensure that every Michigan family has access to the support and resources they need. Our work doesn’t stop here! Let’s keep pushing for policies that invest in our children, our families, and Michigan’s future.
