Part 1 - Why are so many mothers and daughters estranged today? Are you estranged from your mother or daughter? And why is this happening at such an alarming rate? We have been asked to repost the mother-daughter estrangement blogs from last year due to high interest. "Today, there is an alarming increase of young adult daughters cutting off contact from their mothers, and we need to find out why they are making this heart-breaking decision. In 1997, when I started working as a mother-daughter therapist, estrangement was rare. Becoming estranged was reserved for the most abusive relationships and made after a lifetime of struggle for healing and connection. Today’s sharp increase in mother-daughter estrangements is being led by daughters in their twenties and thirties, and mothers are often blindsided and confused by their daughter’s decision. We owe it to mothers and daughters to understand why this is happening because mothers and daughters of all ages need each other. Research shows that mothers and daughters need each other for their emotional wellbeing, and that emotional growth and development is best done within the mother-daughter relationship. This means that today’s estrangement trend is harming both the mother’s and daughter’s emotional wellbeing and development." Systemic Family Therapy Conference, In-person event in Orlando, Florida November 4 - 7, 2024 A New Understanding of Generational Trauma Between Mothers and Daughters I will be speaking between 8.30-9.30am EST in-person. There will be 5 main points that I will be addressing; these are - 1. What generational trauma mothers and daughters experience, how it harms the mother-daughter bond, and is passed down from mother to daughter. 2. Why daughters can inherit the harm that generational trauma inflicts on their mother. 3. Why blaming mothers for passing on trauma is inaccurate and causes harm. 4. What might be causing today’s increase in mother-daughter estrangement. 5. A case study that illustrates women’s generational experience with patriarchy, how to facilitate the Mother-Daughter History Mapping exercise, and how trauma is passed down the generations from mother to daughter.?
