The Mother Cabrini Health Foundation is excited to mark our first 5 years of responsive grantmaking to improve the health and well-being of vulnerable New Yorkers. Last year, we proudly supported more than 500 nonprofits and invested $172 million under new program areas to improve access to care for immigrants and other underserved populations, meet the mental health needs of children and adults, address social determinants of health, and strengthen our healthcare workforce. Together, we’re building a brighter future for New York. ? Learn more about how our grantee partners are meeting community health needs and closing the gap on disparities across New York State. It seeks to promote, sponsor, and support activities, programs, and initiatives that enhance access to affordable quality healthcare and healthcare-related services and address the unmet healthcare and healthcare related needs of communities across New York State, including, in each case, the social determinants of health, consistent with the ethical principles, tenets, and teachings of the Roman Catholic Faith. Since its inception, the Mother Cabrini Health Foundation has awarded approximately 2,200 grants, totaling nearly $635 million, to nonprofits, community-based organizations, and healthcare and social services providers across New York State.

Congratulations to our grantee partner, Sarah's Guest House in Syracuse, NY, for doubling capacity and?expanding accessible lodging for patients and families traveling far from home ?for medical care. Our Program Officer Michelle Brown and Community Engagement Associate Tracey Pincelli were proud to join the celebration with staff and community to mark this needed service expansion. For over 30 years, Sarah's Guest House has been a leader in providing support to individuals financially affected by healthcare costs, ensuring that they can access necessary medical care in the Central New York Region. With this increase in capacity, they will continue to assist many in need by offering affordable or free lodging, food, and transportation. This makes Sarah’s Guest House the only adult healthcare hospitality home in the region.

Nurse Practitioners (NPs) are the backbone of healthcare. They provide essential services, advocate for patients, and make a significant impact every day. This week is National Nurse Practitioner Week—a time to honor the compassionate care, dedication, and expertise of Nurse Practitioners across the nation.?? ? Research shows that when nurses are given the resources they need to succeed, entire communities become healthier. That’s why we launched the Nursing Initiative—to support, enrich, and protect nurses, enabling them to deliver the highest quality of care.? ? To all the NPs who work tirelessly on the front lines and beyond, thank you for your commitment to health and healing. Your contributions are deeply felt by every patient and community you serve.? ? Approximately 1.8 million New Yorkers have been diagnosed with diabetes, putting them at risk for serious health complications such as heart disease, stroke, blindness, kidney failure, and amputations. In New York City alone, diabetes was the fourth leading cause of death overall and the fourth leading cause of death among non-Hispanic Black adults in 2020. The overall obesity rate among adult New Yorkers is 25%, with even higher rates in Central Brooklyn neighborhoods that have large immigrant populations. This #AmericanDiabetesMonth, we celebrate the efforts of our grantee partners, such as CAMBA Inc., and their Brooklyn Drive Down Diabetes program. They provide essential education, prevention, and treatment services aimed at reducing the incidence of this chronic disease and helping New Yorkers with diabetes live longer, healthier lives.
