?? Tips from Alexandra Elich-Burr, Director of Communications Media Relations Behind every pitch is a person—and that applies to reporters too. They’re juggling multiple deadlines and often under-appreciated for their work. A little kindness goes a long way: ?? Acknowledge their time with a polite apology when calling. ?? Show gratitude after securing an opportunity. ?? Proactively offer value, like early access to reports or resources for future stories. When we build relationships based on respect and empathy, we’re not just securing coverage; we’re fostering partnerships. #mediarelations #communications #prcomms #prstrategy #agency #pragency #marketingagency

?? Tips from Alexandra Elich-Burr, Director of Communications Media Relations: Reporters aren’t always glued to their inboxes, so connecting requires a creative approach. Here’s how our comms team gets it done: 1?? Cold Calls: If you’ve worked with a reporter before, a quick call (you can often find their number from a past email signature) can deliver instant feedback. Always acknowledge the interruption and respect their time—empathy matters. 2?? Texting: A well-timed text—especially with embargoed stories or as a post-opportunity follow-up—can cut through the noise. It’s often the fastest way to get a response, even if it’s a simple “no.” 3?? Social Media: LinkedIn and Instagram DMs are underrated tools. Engaging with posts or tagging them in a comment can nudge them to check their inbox. The takeaway: Meet them where they are. #mediarelations #communications #prcomms #prstrategy #agency #pragency #marketingagency

??Tips from Alexandra Elich-Burr, Director of Communications Media Relations: Persistence is an essential skill in PR, but it can feel tricky to balance. Our seasoned comms team has a tried-and-true rule: 3–4 follow-ups typically hit the sweet spot for getting a response—especially when the pitch is a perfect fit for a reporter's beat. The key? Be upfront about your persistence. A little self-awareness (“I know I’m being that annoying PR person”) goes a long way. Most reporters understand and often apologize for delays—they’re just busy juggling multiple stories. TLDR: Respect, patience, and good timing often turn “no response” into a meaningful conversation. #mediarelations #communications #prcomms #prstrategy #agency #pragency #marketingagency

Before moving into PR and communications, Alexandra Elich-Burr spent nearly a decade as a reporter—an experience that gave her a behind-the-scenes look at how newsrooms operate and prepared her for her role as Director of Comms and Media Relations. She knows what reporters need, how to craft stories that connect, and the nuances of their day-to-day that are essential for building strong, trusted relationships.?Check out her tips from the newsroom below!
I think every public relations professional should spend time in a newsroom—whether shadowing reporters, asking media contacts about their routines, or learning how their day-to-day really works. Meeting journalists where they are is invaluable. It’s about learning the language: ?? What makes a VO, a VOSOT, or a full package? ?? Does the story pitch answer the ultimate question:?“Why does the viewer/reader care?” ?? Does your story have concrete data—the quantitative and qualitative elements that offer credibility? Or is it too promotional? ? Did their editor give the green light? Why or why not? These insights can shape how PR pros craft their stories, making them more relevant, timely, and useful for journalists. And it builds empathy for the relentless work reporters do—balancing deadlines, chasing leads, and connecting with sources. Reporters are constantly reaching out, calling, emailing, and knocking on doors to get the story. As PR pros, we can make their lives easier by being a resource: ?? Offer clear, concise information they can use. ?? Let them know, “Feel free to text me if you need a day-of interview.” ? Respond quickly and deliver on time. My time in the newsroom taught me that building trust and meaningful relationships with the media starts with truly understanding their world. That’s why PR and corporate comms leaders should seriously consider hiring former journalists. They bring an insider’s perspective—one that can shape strategy, improve media relations, and elevate storytelling. Journalists understand the pressures, priorities, and needs of the newsroom because they’ve lived it. This experience is invaluable in creating pitches that land, building long-term media trust, and adding authenticity to your PR approach. Have you ever shadowed a reporter or spent time in a newsroom? If not, it might just change the way you think about PR. #PublicRelations #corporatecommunications #journalism #WorkTips #leadership #MediaRelations #PRTips #Communications #CorporateCommunications Kingston Marketing Group https://lnkd.in/emK-93fB
