  • On Tuesday, March 25, the Qualla Boundary Historical Society and the North Carolina Trail of Tears Association present the lecture "You Will Remember Your Old Friend: Junaluska's Trail of Tears and Staying Power" at Museum of the Cherokee People. At 6pm in the TJ Holland Education Room, Dr. Stuart Marshall will speak about the well-remembered warrior Junaluska, who backtracked the Trail of Tears to return to his homeland and become a founding father of Eastern Cherokee sovereignty. Beginning with the familiar story, Dr. Marshall offers new insights into Junaluska's long political career, his demands for citizenship rights, and his efforts to secure a future for Cherokees in North Carolina. This event is free of charge and open to all. A reception will follow Dr. Marshall's talk. #NCHistory #Museums #WesternNorthCarolina #History

On February 18, Cherokee artists Kevin Tafoya, Jakeli Swimmer, Trista Welch, Atsei Cooper, Hope Huskey gathered at the Museum of the Cherokee People for the initial session of Indigenous Logic Modeling cohort. The purpose of the group is to build artist capacity and community as they explore Indigenous Logic Model creation, along with various graphic illustration methods for program evaluation to support organizational development across Indian Country. This initiative, funded by Harrah’s Scholarship Fund and First Nations Development Institute, supports artists in visually communicating ideas, processes, and outcomes for Native led organizations. We’re excited to witness their growth!

  • Alongside talented Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians visual artists, members of Museum of the Cherokee People's staff recently attended the opening of 'Homelands: Connecting to Mounds through Native Art,' a three-year exhibition at McClung Museum of Natural History and Culture, University of Tennessee. From McClung: "Knoxville sits on the Ancestral homelands of eleven Federally Recognized Tribes. Mounds, like the one located on the university’s campus and thousands of others across the region, are still important aspects of contemporary Indigenous lifeways. 'Homelands: Connecting to Mounds through Native Art' centers Native interpretation to explore Indigenous relationships to mounds and placemaking. Featuring contemporary works by 17 Native artists, the exhibition highlights the cultural and spiritual continuity of mounds as sacred spaces. 'Homelands' is co-curated by four Native Nations connected to Knox County: Cherokee Nation, Coushatta Tribe of Louisiana, Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI), and The Muscogee (Creek) Nation." Over the past four years, MotCP staff has worked closely with McClung as experts in the care and protection of the Cherokee peoples’ history, material culture, and knowledge. Reciprocal relationships between non-tribal museums and Native tribes, artists, and cultural leaders are crucial to the ethical advancement of Native interpretation and collections care: 'Homelands' is the result of allyship in action. ??: EBCI artists and Museum staff smile at the opening of 'Homelands.'
