MUSIC AND MINDFULNESS WORK TOGETHER TO REDUCE ANXIETY: “Meeting people where they are and bringing them to a calmer place,” explains Music Therapist John Glaubitz, MA, MTBC, NMT, “helps patients with therapy and psychosocial goals.”
Glaubitz, who started the music therapy program at Jefferson Moss-Magee Rehabilitation – Center City in 2017, worked with Dance/Movement Therapist Lynn Falk, MA, R-DMT, to develop a series of meditation scripts that address many issues spinal cord injury patients deal with every day.
Glaubitz says he plays his guitar while talking to patients and takes cues from them – their body language and breathing rate. He is especially sensitive to how the technique of breath awareness and body scan presents problems for patients who are not breathing on their own, have limited sensation, or have had recent amputations. Falk also observes even the subtlest movement cues and guides patients to bring their attention to the breath and parts of their bodies that they can feel and move without pain.
“We use all of the muscles in the face to do a body scan without having to use other parts of the body,” explains Glaubitz. “I’ve helped many patients fall asleep with the combination of music and mindfulness meditation and now – thanks to Alexa devices in each room with pre-recorded sessions – patients can listen to it every night if they want.”
“There’s a lot of extraneous noise in the hospital,” says Glaubitz, “but music conceived with mindfulness and just the right amount of tension – not spa music – can pull patients into a place where they can deal with anxiety or pain management.” Falk’s voice accompanies Glaubitz’s compositions and guides patients to bring their attention to the present moment and bodily sensations without judgement.
Patients often express gratitude for helping them relax and find moments of peacefulness during their hospital stay. Falk and Glaubitz acknowledge that providing relief from the stress of rehabilitation is a special role to be in.
