Leadership at Jefferson Moss-Magee Rehabilitation kicked off the season of giving early by volunteering at the American Cancer Society Hope Lodge. The group provided dinner to ease the burden for 70 patients and their families staying at the Lodge. The American Cancer Society Hope Lodge program provides a free home away from home for cancer patients receiving treatment in the Philadelphia area, as well as their caregivers. The facility helps patients access care supported by a homelike environment where guests can share a meal, join in the evening’s activities, or unwind in their own private room. A truly uplifting experience for everyone involved-particularly the volunteers!

Members of the community had the unique opportunity to hear from Drs. Alberto Esquenazi and Nathan Mayer about the care provided to Celestine Tate Harrington as a pediatric patient at MossRehab in the 1970s. On November 19, PBS WHYY hosted a screening of American Masters: Renegades, a docu-series sharing the untold stories of five disabled trailblazers, breaking barriers, making history. One of those 5 episodes features Celestine Tate Harrington, who was born with a condition that left her unable to use her arms and legs. At then-MossRehab, she learned to use customized innovative equipment that allowed her achieve a new level of self-sufficiency and independence that would not been possible otherwise. You may Celestine’s first made headlines in 1975 when she won a custody battle against the Philadelphia Department of Child Services after the department claimed that her disability prevented her from providing adequate care to her infant daughter, Nia. Following the screening, the doctors, along with Celestine’s adult daughter, Nia and the documentary filmmakers spoke to a live audience about their experiences.
