  • Creative Arts Therapy Patient Spotlight: Tim Lawall Tim undergoes outpatient rehab at our Riverfront site in South Philly, where he is being treated for a traumatic brain injury that occurred in 2017. Over the past year Tim was introduced to creative arts therapies when his speech therapist and the music therapist partnered for one of Tim’s rehab sessions. Initially, Tim created songs to address speech goals. These song lyrics were reminders for his physical therapy goals. That inspired Tim to further explore his creative side with 1:1 sessions with the music therapist and art therapist. Today he has unofficially acquired the role as the "Mayor" of Creative Arts, because of his constant friendly smile and willingness to engage in conversation with every patient or visitor that passes through. Tim has defied the odds with his long-term rehabilitation. Whether he is playing on the drums or painting in the art studio at the Riverfront, his progress reflects the vital role of creative arts therapies in a patient’s physical, cognitive and emotional healing. Keep up the amazing and inspiring work, Tim! #creativeartstherapy #creativeartstherapymonth #arttherapy #musictherapy #physicalrehab #cognitiverehab #braininjury #tbi #braininjuryawarenessmonth

  • A stray bullet robbed Amanda Parezo of her mobility and forever changed the trajectory of her life. Navigating the complexities of a spinal cord injury brings with it a unique set of challenges, compounded by the trauma of random gun violence. This video is an intimate look at Amanda’s physical and emotional journey to independence. With the support of her Jefferson Moss-Magee Rehabilitation care team, university colleagues, students, friends, family and the community, Amanda has found joy and purpose.

  • MUSIC AND MINDFULNESS WORK TOGETHER TO REDUCE ANXIETY: “Meeting people where they are and bringing them to a calmer place,” explains Music Therapist John Glaubitz, MA, MTBC, NMT, “helps patients with therapy and psychosocial goals.” Glaubitz, who started the music therapy program at Jefferson Moss-Magee Rehabilitation – Center City in 2017, worked with Dance/Movement Therapist Lynn Falk, MA, R-DMT, to develop a series of meditation scripts that address many issues spinal cord injury patients deal with every day. Glaubitz says he plays his guitar while talking to patients and takes cues from them – their body language and breathing rate. He is especially sensitive to how the technique of breath awareness and body scan presents problems for patients who are not breathing on their own, have limited sensation, or have had recent amputations. Falk also observes even the subtlest movement cues and guides patients to bring their attention to the breath and parts of their bodies that they can feel and move without pain. “We use all of the muscles in the face to do a body scan without having to use other parts of the body,” explains Glaubitz. “I’ve helped many patients fall asleep with the combination of music and mindfulness meditation and now – thanks to Alexa devices in each room with pre-recorded sessions – patients can listen to it every night if they want.” “There’s a lot of extraneous noise in the hospital,” says Glaubitz, “but music conceived with mindfulness and just the right amount of tension – not spa music – can pull patients into a place where they can deal with anxiety or pain management.” Falk’s voice accompanies Glaubitz’s compositions and guides patients to bring their attention to the present moment and bodily sensations without judgement. Patients often express gratitude for helping them relax and find moments of peacefulness during their hospital stay. Falk and Glaubitz acknowledge that providing relief from the stress of rehabilitation is a special role to be in. #musictherapy #mindfulness #physicalrehab #cognitiverehab #philadelphia #creativeartstherapy #meditation #anxiety #painmanagement

  • Is it Sunday yet? Asking for some colleagues… Facility dogs, Nigel and Bayley, ditched the scrubs and came to work in their favorite Eagles gear to bring smiles to the faces of our staff and patients. Nigel also brought a football and played catch in the therapy gym. Nigel (Brian Dawkins jersey) works alongside occupational therapist, Peter DeLong, at Jefferson Moss-Magee Rehabilitation – Center City. Bayley (wearing the neck scarf) works alongside occupational therapist, Allison Hendrix Rubin at our MossRehab Institute for Brain Health. As facility dogs, they are highly trained to interact and engage patients during therapy sessions to help them reach rehab goals. ****SUPER BOWL TV STAR AGAIN**** Additionally, a new Wawa Super Bowl commercial was released yesterday with a cameo by Nigel! The TV spot is narrated by former quarterback Nick Foles. If you are a fan of Nigel, and many of you are, you may remember this isn't his first time in a Super Bowl ad. He appeared in a Wawa commercial during the last Super Bowl with the Chiefs. Let us know if you see it this weekend!**** #GoBirds #FlyEaglesFly #PhiladelphiaEagles #occupationaltherapy #teamjefferson #facilitydog #servicedog
