The ability to walk is something that can easily be taken for granted until we are faced with a disabling injury or illness. While some individuals may not recover the ability to walk unassisted, our technology and innovation allows them to benefit from that activity which is key to support long-term health and wellness. The activity-based therapy program is not covered by insurance, but we are able to offer those services thanks to the annual Walk-It-Out step-a-thon. Please join us on April 5 and help us keep the treadmills going continuously for 12 hours! Details: https://bit.ly/4gOccOA

Former patient turned Paralympian, Emelia Perry, returned to Jefferson recently. This time, she participated in a round table discussion and presentation to medical students, and staff about the importance of disability-specific care. “If a person can’t feel their legs, like I can’t, they don’t have normal pain that would tell them or a doctor if something is wrong. They need physicians who understand that and can adapt their approach. They need doctors who will care about the problems they think they have,” she shared Read more: https://bit.ly/4itvQkJ

Creative Arts Therapy Patient Spotlight: Tim Lawall Tim undergoes outpatient rehab at our Riverfront site in South Philly, where he is being treated for a traumatic brain injury that occurred in 2017. Over the past year Tim was introduced to creative arts therapies when his speech therapist and the music therapist partnered for one of Tim’s rehab sessions. Initially, Tim created songs to address speech goals. These song lyrics were reminders for his physical therapy goals. That inspired Tim to further explore his creative side with 1:1 sessions with the music therapist and art therapist. Today he has unofficially acquired the role as the "Mayor" of Creative Arts, because of his constant friendly smile and willingness to engage in conversation with every patient or visitor that passes through. Tim has defied the odds with his long-term rehabilitation. Whether he is playing on the drums or painting in the art studio at the Riverfront, his progress reflects the vital role of creative arts therapies in a patient’s physical, cognitive and emotional healing. Keep up the amazing and inspiring work, Tim! #creativeartstherapy #creativeartstherapymonth #arttherapy #musictherapy #physicalrehab #cognitiverehab #braininjury #tbi #braininjuryawarenessmonth
