关于我们

The Moses/Weitzman Health System is a global leader addressing challenges faced by organizations caring for the poor and diverse populations, and is home to programs focusing on education, research, and process improvement support for safety net providers. The system delivers primary care to more than 150,000 patients in Connecticut, and extends access to specialty care for more than 2.5 million individuals across the U.S. It is a national accrediting body for organizations training advanced practice providers, and offers accredited education and training for Medical Assistants in multiple states. As an incubator for new ideas in areas including social justice, the environment, and social determinants of health, the MWHS is addressing challenges faced by providers caring for underserved communities, creating innovative and impactful initiatives led by nationally and internationally recognized experts. As it forges pathways into the future of primary care, the MWHS honors Lillian Reba Moses (1924-2012), a granddaughter of slaves, and Gerard (Gerry) Weitzman (1938-1999), whose ancestors escaped pogroms in Eastern Europe. Their vision and commitment to justice and equity in healthcare is the foundation upon which the Moses/Weitzman Health System was built.

Vice President and Director, Weitzman Institute | Health Equity Sr. Scholar | Epidemiologist | Health Services Researcher | Marquis Who’s Who in America | CHIEF | 2024 Most Influential Filipina Woman in the World Award?

That’s a wrap! Represented Weitzman Institute and AcademyHealth during the 2024 Association for Public Policy Analysis & Management Fall Research Conference (#2024APPAM), “Policymaking at the Federal, State, and Local Levels.” Grateful for the opportunity to provide insights as a discussant on two panels, “Equity in Crisis and Disasters” and “Demographic Representation in the Workforce.” A few key points: ?? According to the 2024 U.N. Report, “Why so Few Women are in Political Leadership,” only 27 out of 195 recognized countries are led by a woman, and 107 countries (54.9%) have never had a woman Head of State. Some of the cited barriers include limited access to financial networks and political patronage, as well as lack of political will to challenge male-dominated decision-making. ?? In prospective/retrospective analyses of the impact of policies, whether access to timely care during a public health emergency or efforts to increase homeownership as an antidote to homelessness, keep in mind unintended consequences, particularly who is (and who isn’t) benefiting from such policies. ?? Dr. Lidia Cano P. from MIT discussed her Nature paper with Dr. ChangHoon Hahn on “Exposing disparities in flood adaptation for equitable future interventions in the USA,” which highlighted unequal access (including affordability) to flood insurance and information about flood risks and adaptation strategies, as well as enforcement of floodplain development regulations and focus on areas with higher properties values as reasons accounting for observed disparities. Potential solutions include mapping to inform targeted interventions in flood-prone zones, financial assistance programs to support flood mitigation activities, and greater investment in equity-centered policy development.

Vice President and Director, Weitzman Institute | Health Equity Sr. Scholar | Epidemiologist | Health Services Researcher | Marquis Who’s Who in America | CHIEF | 2024 Most Influential Filipina Woman in the World Award?

Follow up to my prior post: Filled with joy and gratitude to receive the prestigious "Most Influential Filipina Woman in the World" award from the Foundation for Filipina Women's Network under the category of “Innovator and Thought Leader: Pioneer of Progress.” Surrounded by fellow Filipina disrupters, trailblazers, and social change agents, I was honored at the Awards Gala Ceremony, the highlight of the 20th Filipina Leadership Global Summit, held at the Sheraton Grand Sydney Hyde Park in Sydney, Australia, from October 27 to 31, 2024. The 2024 Summit’s theme "Femtech Futures: AI & Tech," celebrates women of Philippine ancestry who are transforming leadership in the global workplace. As part of this recognition and the Summit, I shared how our team at?the Weitzman Institute has leveraged technology to tackle pressing primary care and public health issues from upskilling the healthcare workforce, ensuring timely access to quality healthcare, and addressing the youth mental health crisis. My commitment to a two-year “Global Project” includes understanding the mental health needs of Filipinas and other women of color in the healthcare workforce (DM if you’re interested in learning more). Marily M., Founder and CEO of the Foundation for Filipina Women's Network, states, "The Global FWN100? awardees are not just leaders; they are visionaries who dare to reimagine the future. These women embody the spirit of innovation, resilience, and compassion that defines the Filipina on the world stage. Through their groundbreaking work in AI, technology, and beyond, they are not only shattering glass ceilings but are architecting entirely new leadership paradigms." Thank you again to Marily Mondejar, Joyce R. Javier MD, MPH, MS, FAAP, Teresita Batayola, FE PUNZALAN, Nora Galleros, Maria Beebe, Bambi Lorica, MD, Ellen Samson, Laarni San Juan RN, PHN, MPH, Lorna Patajo-Kapunan, Rhodora Palomar-Fresnedi Sofia Aragon, JD, BSN, RN, FAAN Dr. Denise Koh (BSc, MD, CCFP, MPH, FRCPC, ACBOM), Regina Berba, Myla Arceno, Maria Benel Corazon Se, CPA, Donna Avellana Künzler, Marla Rausch, Thelma Boac and the many other prior awardees who I met this past week who have come before me to pave the way where there was no way, said "yes" when others said "no" or "it can't be done", and have also disrupted spaces to be "the first and only, though certainly not the last."

Check this out! We were featured in a presentation by The National Institutes of Health's Dr. Sara Van Driest in the closing plenary session at the American Academy of Pediatrics' National Conference & Exhibition in Orlando, which included an overview of the All of Us Research Program’s impact on children’s health.
