Ramadan Mubarak! Tonight marks the beginning of Ramadan, a sacred month observed by Muslims worldwide. Ramadan is a time of fasting, prayer, reflection, and community. From dawn to sunset, Muslims fast as an act of devotion, gratitude, and spiritual discipline, while also deepening their connection to God and strengthening bonds of compassion and generosity. The month commemorates the first revelation of the Quran and is a time for self-improvement, charity, and togetherness. As we enter this holy month, we extend our warmest wishes to our Muslim friends and neighbors. May this Ramadan bring peace, joy, and blessings to all who observe. This week, Bahá’ís around the world celebrate Ayyám-i-Há, a special period of joy, charity, and preparation for the Fast. Observed from February 26 to March 1, these “Intercalary Days” hold a unique place in the Bahá’í calendar, bridging the final two months of the year. Ayyám-i-Há is a time for hospitality, service, and acts of generosity. Bahá’u’lláh, the founder of the Bahá’í Faith, emphasized that these days should be dedicated to bringing joy to others, showing kindness to those in need, and strengthening community bonds. Gifts are often exchanged, and many Bahá’ís use this time for service projects and charitable giving. Maha Shivratri, meaning "the Great Night of Shiva," honors Lord Shiva, one of the principal deities in Hinduism, known as the destroyer and transformer in the Holy Trinity (Trimurti) alongside Brahma the creator and Vishnu the preserver. This night marks a time of introspection, prayer, and fasting, symbolizing the victory of light over darkness and good over evil. Devotees gather in temples, chant mantras, and meditate through the night, seeking blessings for health, prosperity, and spiritual growth. Today, as we celebrate love in all its forms, let’s take a moment to reflect on the history of Valentine’s Day and its deeper meaning across faith traditions. Valentine’s Day traces its roots to St. Valentine, a third-century Roman priest who, according to legend, secretly married couples despite a ban by Emperor Claudius II. The emperor believed that unmarried soldiers were more focused and less likely to desert the army, so he outlawed marriage for young men. St. Valentine defied this unjust law, performing weddings in secret as an act of love and resistance. He was eventually imprisoned and executed for his actions, but his legacy of love and compassion lives on. At Mosaic, we believe love is an action. It’s in the way we come together across differences, build understanding, and support one another in our shared humanity. Whether through dialogue, service, or simply showing kindness, we can all be messengers of love in our communities. How will you share love and kindness today? Dating back to ancient times, Tu BiShvat was originally a date to calculate the age of fruit-bearing trees for tithing. Today, it has evolved into a time to plant trees, reflect on our connection to the Earth, and take action for environmental sustainability.
