On Veterans Day earlier this week, MorseLife had the distinct honor of hosting a heartfelt event featuring our esteemed Levin Palace resident and decorated WWII veteran, Franklin Simon. Franklin shared poignant memories from his journey to Normandy over the summer, commemorating the 80th anniversary of D-Day in June. He recounted the warm reception he received on his trip which included meetings with fellow veterans, and notable encounters with Steven Spielberg and President Joe Biden. Franklin's service during World War II is a testament to bravery and dedication. Enlisting in the U.S. Army at just 17, he participated in the D-Day invasion, contributing to the liberation of France and the eventual defeat of Nazi forces. His valor extended to the liberation of Holocaust survivors from the Mauthausen concentration camp in Austria and the subsequent liberation of Czechoslovakia. For his extraordinary service, Franklin has been awarded three Purple Hearts, the French Legion of Honour, and a commemorative medal from the Czech Republic. The 80th anniversary of D-Day serves as a powerful reminder of the courage and sacrifice of our heroes. We are profoundly proud of Franklin's legacy and the contributions of all our resident veterans. Thank you to our veterans for your bravery and dedication. Constantly innovating, MorseLife strives to enrich life even at the end of life, with unique services like our music therapy program. ?? ?? Our music therapists and interns, like Sarah Secrist, use music to address the physical, emotional, spiritual, and cognitive needs of our hospice and palliative care patients and their families. When asked about her time as an intern with MorseLife Hospice (a National Roster American Music Therapy Internship site), Sarah said, "My experience working as a music therapy intern with hospice and palliative patients at MorseLife was transformative and inspiring. Using music to meet each individual patient's cognitive, social, spiritual, emotional, and/or physical needs gave me a sense of purpose and helped me foster powerful bonds with each patient I encountered. The relationships were reciprocal; through each patient, I learned stories of hope, faith, love, and resilience every time I met with them. The stories and memories I have taken away from my time with these patients have enriched my life in a way that has made me a better person than I was before I met them. That is the power of hospice and palliative work and the power of music therapy."
